Launched on July 21, 2015, India’s best-selling midsize SUV, which is available with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains, turns a decade old today. With domestic market sales of 1.26 million units and exports of 289,083 units, the Hyundai Creta has sold a total of 15,57,133 units till end-June 2025.
The Creta, Hyundai Motor India’s best-selling SUV and India’s No. 1 midsize SUV, has turned 10 years old today. Launched on July 21, 2015, the Creta has from launch till end-June 2025 registered total wholesales of 1.55 million units. This comprises 1.26 million units in the domestic market and 289,083 units shipped to overseas markets (see data table below).
In the 18 months since the new Creta was launched in January 2024, the company has sold a total of 279,527 units in the domestic market.
Even as the surging demand for compact SUVs continues, there is growing demand for bigger, feature-laden midsize SUVs and the Hyundai Creta has managed to hold its own despite plenty of new competition.
In the recently ended first quarter of FY2026, the Hyundai Creta has topped the Utility Vehicle sales chart with 47,662 units. This is a 3% YoY increase and translates into an additional 1,260 units (Q1 FY2025: 46,402 units), which is enough to help it stay ahead of the Maruti Brezza. In Q1 FY2026, the Creta was the best-selling UV both in April 2025 (17,016 units) and in June 2025 (15,786 units).
In FY2025, the Creta was ranked UV No. 2 (194,871 units) after the Tata Punch compact SUV (196,567 units), narrowly missing out on the No. 1 position by just 1,696 units. Nevertheless, it helped contribute to growing the SUV share in Hyundai Motor India’s passenger vehicle sales to 68.5% or 410,086 units, up 5.5% YoY, in FY2025. At 194,871 units, the Creta and Creta Electric together accounted for a 47% share of Hyundai’s SUV sales in FY2025, up from the 42% the ICE Creta had in FY2024.
In January 2024, Hyundai Motor India launched the facelifted Creta with completely redone styling, front and rear and also plenty of updates to the interior. The midsize SUV buyer took to the new Creta rapidly. The new Creta cruised to 100,000-unit sales in just six months, making it the fastest in its segment to hit the 100,000 milestone and in half the time rival Maruti Grand Vitara took. In the 18 months since the new Creta was launched, the company has sold a total of 279,527 units in the domestic market.
Hyundai’s diesel strategy pays off, expands line-up with Creta Electric
A year after the new ICE Creta was launched, Hyundai introduced the Creta Electric which has helped the company drive ahead of BYD India in the e-PV numbers game. However, the market is yet to warm up to the Creta Electric, which was expected to see four-digit monthly numbers. Nevertheless, with the Creta Electric’s entry, Hyundai’s e-PV share has risen to 5% from 1% a year ago in Q1 FY2026.
Hyundai’s strategy to remain bullish on diesel, compared to some of rivals in India, is paying off. The Creta’s pack of powertrains comprises 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine options. In terms of market pull, the new BS VI-compliant diesel motor is keeping pace with the other two powerplants. It is understood that demand continues to be strong for the Creta’s diesel variants, particularly those equipped with automatic transmissions.
At present, there are all of 44 Creta variants on sale comprising 23 petrol (Rs 13.67 lakh to Rs 23.60 lakh), 15 diesel (Rs 15.69 lakh to Rs 23.93 lakh) and six electric (Rs 19.14 lakh to Rs 24.90 lakh, all prices, on-road Delhi).
Meanwhile, work has commenced on the third-generation Creta, which will also get a hybrid powertrain option and expand the engines available to four powertrains comprising two petrols, one diesel and a petrol-hybrid.
