Swaraj Tractors Commissions 42 MWp Captive Solar Project

Swaraj Tractors has commissioned a 42 MWp group captive solar project in Bathinda, Punjab, developed by Mahindra Susten. The project is expected to meet around 50% of the tractor maker’s manufacturing electricity requirements.

The solar installation will supply renewable electricity to Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing, assembly and foundry operations in Mohali. The project has been developed across approximately 141 acres and is among the larger group captive solar installations in Punjab, according to the companies.

Swaraj Tractors’ 42 MWp Solar Project in Punjab

The project uses N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules installed on fixed-tilt structures. Its remaining capacity is proposed to be used to meet the electricity requirements of other Mahindra Group entities in Punjab.

Gaganjot Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Swaraj Division, said the company is pursuing a strategy focused on reducing energy consumption and progressively replacing conventional energy sources with renewable power.

Swaraj said its manufacturing plants achieved EP100 certification in 2023 for doubling energy productivity. The company is also working to increase the share of renewable energy in its overall energy mix.

Solar Plant to Supply Swaraj’s Mohali Manufacturing Operations

The Bathinda facility is expected to generate approximately 61.54 million units of renewable electricity annually. According to the release, it is also expected to offset more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

More than 97% of the project’s components have been sourced from within India, the companies said. Semi-automated robotic systems are planned to be used for cleaning the solar modules, which are estimated to save around 1.92 million litres of water annually.

Mahindra Susten Enters Group Captive C&I Power Supply

For Mahindra Susten, the project marks its entry into supplying electricity to commercial and industrial customers through the group captive model.

Avinash Rao, Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra Susten, said the project expands the company’s business model beyond supplying power to government utilities.

Mahindra Susten is the Mahindra Group’s renewable energy platform and independent power producer. The company said the Bathinda project also supports its broader renewable energy portfolio, which includes solar, hybrid energy and battery energy storage projects.

Key Details of the 42 MWp Bathinda Solar Project

Located at Village Teona Pujarian in Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, the project has been developed across around 141 acres. Environmental and social impact assessments, along with a climate change assessment, were undertaken during the project’s development, according to the release.

The companies said measures have been introduced to manage waste, regulate vehicle movement and minimise disturbance to the surrounding ecology.
