Suzuki Motor and Maruti Suzuki to Establish Osamu Suzuki Centre of Excellence in India

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced plans to establish the Osamu Suzuki Centre of Excellence (OSCOE) in India during a remembrance event held at Yashobhoomi, Delhi on April 23, 2025. The centre will honor the legacy of the late Osamu Suzuki, former chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, who died on December 25, 2024, in Japan.

The OSCOE, which will be located in Gujarat and Haryana, aims to promote Japanese manufacturing concepts that contributed to high competitiveness in the automotive sector while fostering a more equitable society. The initiative is designed to support India's objective of high manufacturing growth, improve the standard of component manufacturers, and create programs in collaboration with academia to propagate Japanese manufacturing philosophy.

According to the announcement, the centre's efforts will extend beyond the automotive sector to other areas of manufacturing, reflecting the broader impact of Osamu Suzuki's business approach.

Osamu Suzuki was instrumental in making car ownership accessible to the average Indian consumer and helped establish India as a major car-producing nation. Born on January 30, 1930, he graduated from Chuo University's Faculty of Law in 1953 and began his career at Suzuki Motor Corporation in 1958, where he eventually rose to leadership positions.

Throughout his career, Suzuki received numerous prestigious awards, including India's Padma Bhushan in 2007 and Padma Vibhushan in 2025, Japan's Order of the Rising Sun, and various honors from the Hungarian government.

Maruti Suzuki, a joint venture between Suzuki Motor Corporation and the Indian government that began operations in the early 1980s, revolutionized the Indian automotive landscape by producing affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles that became accessible to the country's growing middle class. The company has maintained market leadership in the passenger vehicle segment for decades.

The press release about the OSCOE was issued by Maruti Suzuki India Limited's Corporate Communication department.
