Mahindra Begins Commercial Production of MaxSeeder Zero-Till Seeding Machine

Mahindra & Mahindra has commenced commercial production and supply of the MaxSeeder, a zero-till, multi-crop seeding machine manufactured under licence from Canada-based Clean Seed Technologies. The machine is being produced at Mahindra’s farm machinery plant in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh.

Designed to sow crops including rice, wheat, soybean, maize and cotton, the MaxSeeder allows seeds to be planted directly into paddy residue with minimal soil disturbance. This reduces the need for field preparation and offers an alternative to stubble burning. The company said the machine can also reduce seed and fertiliser wastage, fuel consumption and labour requirements.

Mahindra will initially distribute the machine through its Farm Equipment Business dealerships in Punjab and Haryana, followed by a phased expansion across India. Field trials conducted in Punjab and Haryana demonstrated its ability to sow seeds in fields with heavy paddy residue.

The tractor-trailed machine can operate with tractors rated at 35 HP or above, reducing the need for higher-horsepower tractors. It features five independent planting row units, adjustable row spacing and multiple metering configurations to accommodate different crops and field conditions.

The MaxSeeder uses an electronic control unit (ECU) to meter and dispense seeds, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea according to field requirements. Operators can control the system through a mobile phone application. A multifunctional tine places urea approximately 1.5 inches below the seed line to improve nutrient placement and reduce fertiliser wastage.

The zero-till system is designed to reduce the number of field operations required, helping farmers save time, fuel and labour during sowing. Its adjustable configurations are also intended to improve equipment utilisation across different crops and farming applications.

Veejay Nakra, president of Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Business, said the partnership combines Clean Seed Technologies’ precision seeding technology with Mahindra’s manufacturing capabilities to expand access to mechanised farming solutions in India and international markets.

Graeme Lempriere, chairman and CEO of Clean Seed Capital Group, said the start of production at Mahindra marked a milestone in the companies’ collaboration on seeding and planting solutions.

The MaxSeeder is part of Mahindra’s expansion in farm machinery and precision agriculture, alongside its existing tractor business.
