Volvo EX90 Electric SUV Launched in India at ₹1.26 Crore
The six-seat, dual-motor SUV enters the premium electric segment with a claimed 625km range, undercutting the Kia EV9 and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV on price.
Volvo India has launched the EX90 electric SUV at ₹1.26 crore (ex-showroom), positioning it as the brand's flagship model and its first all-electric entry in the three-row luxury SUV segment. The launch marks a shift in Volvo India's product strategy, with the EX90 replacing the XC90 at the top of its local lineup — priced ₹27.2 lakh above the petrol-powered model it effectively supersedes.
The India-spec EX90 is offered in a single six-seat configuration and goes up against two established rivals in the segment: the Kia EV9, priced at ₹1.30 crore, and the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580, priced at ₹1.49 crore. At ₹4 lakh less than the EV9 and ₹23 lakh below the EQS SUV 580, the EX90 positions itself as the more accessible option in a still-nascent segment.
Powertrain and Performance
The EX90 is powered by a 106kWh battery pack paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 456hp and 670Nm of torque. Volvo claims a 0–100kph time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 180kph, figures that place it broadly in line with petrol-powered performance SUVs in the same price bracket.
Volvo states a WLTP range of 625km on a full charge. In a real-world test conducted by Autocar India, the SUV returned approximately 5.5km/kWh in efficiency, translating to an estimated range of around 580km — a figure that, if replicable in everyday conditions, would reduce range anxiety on intercity routes.
The vehicle is built on Volvo's 800V SPA2 platform, which enables higher charging speeds compared with many rivals that use 400V architecture. The EX90 supports DC fast charging at up to 350kW, with Volvo claiming a 10–80 percent charge time of 22 minutes. A full charge via the 11kW AC wallbox — included as part of the introductory package — takes approximately 11 hours, which is broadly typical for home charging of large-battery EVs.
Exterior Design
The EX90's exterior follows Volvo's established design direction, characterised by restrained surfacing and the absence of decorative elements. The front features T-shaped LED headlamps with a pixel-style daytime running light pattern, flanked by slim, vertically oriented fog lamps. The front fascia forgoes a conventional grille, replacing it with the Volvo emblem set against a closed panel and a trapezoidal lower air intake.
In profile, the EX90 presents an upright silhouette that prioritises cabin space over aerodynamic drama. The wheelbase measures 2,985mm and the SUV rides on 21-inch alloy wheels as standard. Ground clearance stands at 210mm and can be raised to 250mm via the standard air suspension — a feature that also allows the ride height to be lowered at higher speeds for improved stability and efficiency.
At the rear, C-shaped LED tail-lamps are linked by a black horizontal strip, with additional LED accents flanking the rear windscreen. The tailgate carries a full Volvo wordmark in place of a logo badge. The EX90 is available in six exterior colours: Crystal White, Denim Blue, Mulberry Red, Onyx Black, Sand Dune and Vapour Grey.
Interior and Features
The cabin is built around Volvo's minimalist design approach, with two-tone Nappa leather upholstery, brushed aluminium trim and a near-buttonless dashboard. The primary interface is a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen that consolidates most vehicle functions, including climate, media and navigation. A 9-inch display serves as the driver's instrument cluster.
The second row features captain's chairs that slide and recline, but these lack powered adjustment, ventilation, heating and massage — functions available on the front seats. Rear window sunshades are absent. The third row is accessed through the gap between the second-row seats and is more practical for children or for adults on shorter journeys than for regular long-distance use.
Boot capacity is 324 litres with all three rows in use, rising to 690 litres with the third row folded flat. A 46-litre front storage compartment — a benefit of the electric platform's lack of a conventional engine — provides additional utility. The panoramic sunroof features switchable transparency, adjusting between clear and opaque at the touch of a button.
Standard equipment includes a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, four-zone climate control, nine airbags, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, auto park assist, a digital key, wireless phone charging and a cabin air purifier.
Price and Introductory Offer
At ₹1.26 crore (ex-showroom), the EX90 is available to book immediately. Buyers who complete bookings before 31 December 2026 will receive an 11kW home charger, a three-year service package and an assured buyback guarantee of 65 percent of the vehicle's value after three years. The buyback provision is an attempt to address concerns about long-term residual values of electric vehicles — a factor that has weighed on purchase decisions in the segment.
| Model | Ex-showroom Price |
|---|---|
| Volvo EX90 | ₹1.26 crore |
| Kia EV9 | ₹1.30 crore |
| Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580 | ₹1.49 crore |
The EX90 represents Volvo's push into the electric segment at a time when several premium brands are expanding their EV portfolios in India. The three-row electric SUV space remains limited in volume but has seen growing interest from buyers who prioritise range and cabin space alongside brand credentials.
