Exclusive: Hyundai–TVS Electric Three-Wheeler Targets Late-2027 To Early-2028 Launch
Two versions planned with combined monthly production of 3,000–4,000 units; vehicle co-engineered with TVS Motor to be manufactured at Hosur.
Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company are working to launch their jointly developed electric three-wheeler in late 2027 or early 2028, according to information reviewed by Autocar Professional.
The vehicle, internally called U834, is expected to be manufactured at TVS Motor’s Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu. India will be the first market, followed by expansion into international markets.
The programme envisages two versions, with combined production of around 3,000–4,000 units a month. This translates into an annualised output of 36,000–48,000 units once production reaches the planned level. These volumes reflect the production plan, rather than a first-year sales target.
An initial prototype build is planned for early 2027, with production expected to begin towards the end of the year. The launch timing remains tentative and will depend on testing, certification and manufacturing readiness.
Pilot Ahead of Production
Hyundai Motor India’s ‘Blue Move’ pilot around its Gurugram headquarters is providing real-world operating feedback ahead of the jointly developed three-wheeler’s production programme. The pilot uses air-conditioned electric three-wheelers to assess passenger comfort, vehicle ergonomics and software integration.
Findings from the exercise are expected to inform development ahead of the initial prototype build planned for early 2027 at TVS Motor’s Hosur facility.
Emails sent to TVS Motor Company and Hyundai Motor India seeking comment on the project, planned volumes and launch timeline did not elicit a response at the time of publication.
Hyundai Design, Joint Engineering
Hyundai is leading the design, with the vehicle being co-engineered with TVS Motor. The Indian manufacturer is expected to handle manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, sales and service.
The collaboration combines Hyundai’s design and development capabilities with TVS Motor’s electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise and understanding of local operating conditions.
The companies signed a joint development agreement in April 2026 to commercialise electric three-wheelers for India and additional markets, following the E3W concept’s unveiling at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025.
For Hyundai, the programme extends its participation in Indian mobility into three-wheelers. For TVS Motor, it adds a jointly developed product to its electric vehicle business, with the company responsible for manufacturing and bringing it to market.
IDEA Gold Recognition
Hyundai’s E3W and E4W electric micro-mobility concepts won Gold in the Concepts & Speculative Design category at the 2026 International Design Excellence Awards, or IDEA. The award recognised the concepts, rather than the forthcoming production vehicle.
The E3W concept showcased features aimed at Indian operating conditions, including adjustable ground clearance, thermal management for tropical climates and flexible interiors for passenger transport, goods delivery and emergency services.
The production vehicle’s specifications, pricing and branding have yet to be announced. Those details will establish how the two planned versions are positioned and how much of the concept’s design reaches the market.
