Hyundai Crater could spawn into a future rugged SUV.

Hyundai Crater concept previews brand's future off-roader.

Hyundai has released the first design sketches of the Crater concept, a rugged SUV study set to make its public debut at the upcoming LA Auto Show.

The name Crater, not to be confused with the Creta sold here hints at something dramatic, and the sketches reinforce that impression. The Crater appears to be Hyundai’s boldest exploration yet of a true adventure-focused SUV, potentially aimed at rivals like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and even the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Prado among others.

The concept features a tall, purposeful stance with short overhangs, aggressive fender flares, and futuristic lighting elements, all combining to create a distinctly utilitarian look. According to Hyundai, the Crater explores a tougher, more off-road-oriented identity for the brand — a clear indication that its existing XRT styling packages could evolve into something far more capable.

Such a model would be a welcome addition to Hyundai’s global lineup. While the brand offers several successful crossovers and SUVs, it still lacks a true off-road focused SUV, a segment that continues to surge in popularity worldwide including the lower-end of the segment where Toyota plans to position its recently unveiled Land Cruiser FJ.

The Crater offers an early glimpse of what such a vehicle could become, whether as a trail-ready electric SUV or as inspiration for more hardcore XRT-branded variants. The teaser’s enclosed grille and smooth surfacing point toward electrification, though Hyundai has not confirmed any powertrain details.

If the Hyundai Trail concept evolves into a production SUV, a combustion or hybrid setup remains a strong possibility, putting Hyundai in more direct contention with Ford and Jeep. If the Crater’s full reveal later this week lives up to its name, it’s poised to make a sizable impact when the covers lift in Los Angeles.

Future Hyundai models for India

Hyundai recently announced an aggressive future product roadmap for India, with 26 new models planned by 2030. Among these are an all-new off-road SUV, a new MPV, and a three-row SUV positioned above the Alcazar. It remains to be seen whether the Crater concept previews any of these upcoming India-focused models.
