Maruti Suzuki becomes first Indian carmaker to cross 25 million production
India’s passenger vehicle market leader marks 40 years of production with new milestone; sole Indian company to achieve this.
Maruti Suzuki India has reported that it has achieved cumulative production of over 2.5 crore (25 million) units. This makes Maruti Suzuki the only Indian company to have achieved this significant milestone in passenger vehicle production.
The company, which began its operations in 1983 and rolled out the car which put India on wheels – the Maruti 800 – from its first production facility in Gurugram, Haryana today has two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, located in Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana. Both the facilities together have a manufacturing capacity of 1.5 million units per annum.
The company’s manufacturing facilities, along-with its vast ecosystem of multi-tier suppliers and dealers, contribute significantly to the economy, society and nation building. Today, while Maruti Suzuki retails 16 passenger vehicle models in India, it also exports to around 100 markets worldwide.
Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki, said, “2022 marks 40 years of Suzuki’s partnership with the people of India. Crossing of 25 million cumulative production milestone this year is a testimony of Suzuki’s continued commitment and partnership with the people of India. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all employees of Maruti Suzuki, our vendor partners and dealer partners. It is with their commitment and support that Maruti Suzuki has been able to fulfil the dreams of millions of people to own a car. Going forward, we will continue to work towards our goal of offering ‘Joy of Mobility’ for all. For this we will introduce new exciting, feature rich and environment friendly products in the market. Anticipating growing demand for passenger vehicles, we have also started work on setting up a new manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana.”
Maruti Suzuki is now increasing its focus on the ever-growing SUV space in the Indian market. The company had a 16.65% market share of the utility vehicle market in India. Earlier this year, the company launched the all-new Brezza compact SUV and the Grand Vitara midsize SUV , while an all-new Baleno Cross and the much awaited five-door Jimny SUV will go on sale sometime next year. Both, the Baleno Cross and the five-door Jimny SUV will see a global debut at Auto Expo 2023 in January.
