Tata Motors sells 123,839 cars and SUVs in Q1 FY2026, EV sales pick up for second straight month

Tata Motors today announced its wholesales for June 2025 and the first quarter of FY2026. At 37,083 passenger vehicles sold last month, year-on-year sales were down 15% (June 2024: 43,524 units). This is the third month in a row that sales have declined and June numbers are also the lowest since April 2025 (see data table below).

Overall, Tata Motors’ first-quarter FY2026 performance has been dragged down by June 2025’s 37,083 passenger vehicle sales, the lowest for the company since February 2022 (39,981 PVs).

However, demand for the company’s electric vehicles has picked up since May 2025 after four months of continuous decline – January (5,240 EVs, down 25%), February (5,343 EVs, down 23%), March (5,353 EVs, down 21%) and April (5,318 units, down 16%). May 2025 sales of 5,685 units were up 2% YoY and now June’s 5,228 EVs are up 12% YoY. Tata EV wholesales for Q1 FY2026 at 16,231 units are down 2% YoY (Q1 FY2025: 16,579 units)

Commenting on the numbers, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility said, “In Q1 FY2026, the passenger vehicle industry experienced volume pressures, particularly in May and June, with flat growth reflecting continued softness in demand. The electric vehicle segment emerged a bright spot, driven by robust growth and the launch of new EV models across OEMs, enhancing customer interest and consideration Tata Motors reported wholesales of 124,809 units in Q1 FY2026, including 16,231 EV units, underscoring our commitment to aligning wholesale and registration volumes. EV sales gained strong momentum towards the end of the quarter with a healthy growth trajectory. The refreshed Tiago posted 16% year-on-year volume growth in Q1 FY2026 and new launches — Altroz and Harrier.ev — saw a positive market response, with their full impact expected in the coming months.”

He added, “Looking ahead, while overall industry growth is expected to remain subdued, Tata Motors is well positioned to leverage its new launches to outperform across segments including hatchbacks and SUVs, while continuing to build on the EV momentum.”

For the current calendar year, with six months over, Tata Motors has sold a total of 269,966 passenger vehicles in the January-June 2025 period. This is an 8% YoY decrease (H1 CY2024: 293,114 PVs) and 48% of the company’s record sales of 562,468 PVs in CY2024. This includes 32,167 EVs, down 14% (H1 CY2024: 37,219 EVs) and 47% of the best-ever total of 68,980 EVs sold in CY2024. Clearly, Tata Motors will have to sell more PVs and EVs at a faster pace in the remaining six months of the year if it is to surpass its CY2024 total.
