The third-generation Duster midsize SUV, which kicked off Renault India new model-renewal growth strategy earlier this year and marked the company’s return to the fast-growing midsize SUV market, sold 512 units in July.
This is the new Duster’s lowest monthly wholesales since its March 2026 launch albeit the model, along with sustained demand for the Triber MPV, has helped revive overall passenger vehicle demand for the French car and SUV manufacturer’s passenger vehicle arm in India.
As the five-month wholesales data table (given below) for the newest Renault model in India reveals, the Duster sold 1,402 units in March 2026 and accounted for a 26% share of the company’s 5,046 PV sales, up 77% YoY (March 2025: 2,846 PVs).
April saw the Duster’s sales rise 68% month on month to 2,359 units and gave it a 44% share of the company’s passenger vehicle (PV) sales of 5,413 units. This meant the Duster outsold the Triber MPV in only its second month of sales to become Renault India’s No. 1 model.
However, from May onwards, factory dispatches (wholesales) of the new Duster have fallen month on month – down 46% MoM to 1,267 units in May, down 20% MoM in June (1,011 units) and down 49% MoM in July (512 units). As a result of declining sales for the past three months, the Duster’s share of Renault India’s PV dispatches has dropped from a high of 44% in April to 16% in July.
Nevertheless, the introduction of the Duster, which joined the Triber MPV, Kiger compact SUV and the Kwid hatchback in Renault India’s model line-up, has helped increase total volumes. The Duster’s cumulative five-month domestic market wholesales of 6,551 units give it a 30% share of Renault India’s 21,928 passenger vehicles sold between March and July this year.
The Triber (9,451 units) maintains its No. 1 status with a 43% share with the remaining 27% split between the Kiger (3,759 units, 17% share) and Kwid hatchback (2,167 units, 10% share). Renault India has also exported 1,300 Dusters: April (12 units), June (768 units) and July 520 units).
Ex-showroom pricing for the third-gen global-spec Duster, which has been extensively re-engineered for the Indian market, starts at Rs 10.49 lakh through to Rs 18.49 lakh, while the on-road sticker starts at around Rs 12.43 lakh, depending on the city. The Duster is powered by 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines, with a strong 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain set to join the line-up by Diwali (November 2026).
The Duster, which incorporates 17 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) along with the standard safety equipment, has received a full five-star Bharat NCAP crash safety rating. The Duster’s primary rivals include the midsize SUV market leader Hyundai Creta, new Kia Seltos, Maruti Victoris, Tata Sierra, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.
In mid-July, Renault India launched the Duster Adventure Edition with prices starting at Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom) aiming to ride on the original Duster's reputation in India for ride and handling and its association with journeys beyond daily use.
TRIBER REMAINS RENAULT INDIA’S BEST-SELLING MODEL IN FY2027 YTD
While the first couple of months of a new model’s factory dispatches are essentially a function of sales and marketing to ensure dealers and showrooms are well stocked, it is both production and wholesales numbers in the subsequent months which reveal whether consumer demand is growing.
Between March and July this year, Renault India manufactured 12,195 Dusters. While March 2026 saw 1,864 units roll out from the Oragadam plant in Tamil Nadu, followed by 4,466 units in April, the monthly production, in tandem with the Duster’s wholesales, has reduced month on month: May (2,680 units), June (1,736 units) and July (1,449 units).
Combined domestic market wholesales (6,551 units) and exports (1,300 units) add up to 7,851 units which leaves 4,344 units as inventory. Meanwhile, after the current fiscal year’s first four months, the Triber MPV remains the company’s best-selling product with 7,440 units, followed by the Duster (5,149 units), Kiger (2,575 units) and the Kwid (1,718 units).
MIDSIZE SUV MARKET: A VASTLY DIFFERENT MARKETPLACE
Given the sizeable fan following for the first-generation Renault Duster, which clocked sales of 199,871 units but exited India after a 10-year run, it was expected that buyers would line up for the third-gen MY2026 Duster. That seems to be belied . . . as SIAM’s five-month wholesales data depicts. The difference between the Duster launched in 2012 and the MY2026 model is that the former had a diesel engine option – a 1.5-litre powerplant with 84hp and 108hp output – which was a key contributor to the model’s huge success in India.
Furthermore, in the four years after the first-gen Duster departed, the Indian midsize SUV segment is a vastly different marketplace. There are over 20 models, including eight EVs and some hybrids, fighting tooth and nail for a slice of the segment which is led by the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra Scorpio and the Kia Seltos.
The Duster also has to contend with the Nissan Tekton which is its badge-engineered ‘cousin’ and shares the Duster’s platform, powertrains along with several components and is built on the same assembly line at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant. The Nissan Tekton sold 1,670 units in its first month of sale (July 2026) and accounted for 37% of Nissan India’s wholesales of 4,518 units.
Clearly, both the Renault Duster and the Nissan Tekton have a tough job to draw buyers who also have a wide choice of well-established midsize SUVs backed by larger dealer networks, broader powertrain options as well as stronger brand power.
