Tesla clocks highest sales in India 11 months after launch: 115 e-SUVs in July
The sharp 203% month-on-month jump in July retail sales is the result of Tesla India slashing prices of its sole product – the Model Y – by Rs 900,000 to Rs 50.89 lakh, giving it the No. 3 position among luxury electric passenger vehicle makers behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz with a 16% share.
American EV maker Tesla, which began deliveries of its sole product – the Model Y e-SUV – in India 11 months ago in September 2025 crossed three-figure monthly retail sales for the first time in July 2026. As per the data available on the Vahan portal, Tesla India delivered 115 EVs last month, beating its previous best of 69 units in September and December 2025 (see sales data table below).
Fittingly enough, Tesla India’s highest monthly sales contributed to the Indian electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) segment’s record monthly retail sales of 34,033 units in July. This gave the American EV maker a 0.33% share of the record overall e-PV sales and a 16% share of the 736 luxury electric cars, sedans, SUVs sold in July (up from a 4% share in June 2026).
Following the slashing of the Model Y’s pricing by Rs 900,000 in June, retail sales in July jumped 203% MoM to 115 units, giving Tesla India a 16% share of the 736 luxury electric PVs sold last month.
Tesla Model Y Price Cut Drives Sales Surge in India
The 203% month-on-month spike in July sales (June 2026: 38 Model Ys), is the direct result of Tesla India slashing prices of the Model Y by 900,000 to Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom) in June, increasing the product’s price competitiveness in the market. Before the massive price cut, the Tesla e-SUV witnessed limited demand among potential buyers.
This pricing strategy is part of Tesla's broader plan to expand its presence in the Indian market and compete with established luxury brands. The Model Y’s new price-tag positions it well against rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
Tesla's Rank Among Luxury EV Makers in India
Tesla India’s strong showing last month gave it the No. 3 rank among luxury e-PV OEMs behind BMW India (390 units) and Mercedes-Benz India (174 units) and ahead of Volvo Auto India (51 units). This performance took its cumulative 11-month sales since market entry to 578 units, giving it an 8% share of the 6,825 luxury e-PVs sold between September 2025 and July 2026. August bids fair to be another month of strong sales, given that Tesla has sold 60 e-SUVs in the first 16 days of this month and also crossed the cumulative 600-units mark.
Tesla Model Y and Model Y L: Price, Range and Specs
The Tesla EV is available in a 5-seater (Model Y) and a 6-seater (Model Y L) iteration, priced between Rs 50.89 lakh and Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Choosing some customisations like a grey seat upholstery, a different exterior hue and autonomous driving features can, however, raise the prices by a considerable margin.
The 5-seater model’s lower-spec Premium RWD variant is offered with a 64kWh battery pack with a 500km (WLTP) range, paired with a 299hp electric motor. The higher-spec 5-seater Premium Long Range RWD variant gets a bigger 84.2kWh battery pack that has a claimed range of 661km (WLTP).
Battery pack size of the 6-seater Model Y L with a longer wheelbase is yet to be revealed. However, Tesla has disclosed that it comes with a dual-motor AWD setup and has a higher claimed range of 681km (WLTP).
Tesla Expands Charging Network in India
On August 12, Tesla India opened its newest Destination Charging location at Lake Shore Thane, Mumbai featuring four Destination Chargers AC of 11 kW each. With this facility, Tesla now operates seven charging stations across India, including those in Navi Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram, equipped with 20 Superchargers and 24 Destination Chargers.
