The 125-year-old Chennai-based Murugappa Group, which entered the electric three-wheeler market in July 2023 with its EV brand Montra Electric, has registered cumulative sales of 10,000 electric 3Ws within two years of launch. As per the retail statistics for the e-3W industry, Montra Electric has clocked cumulative sales of 10,193 units till June 18, 2025.
This total comprises 1,273 units in CY2023, growing by 375% to 6,055 units in CY2024 and 2,885 units in the current year’s first five months and 18 days of June (see data table below). In CY2024, Montra Electric was ranked No. 24, which gave it an e-3W market share of 1%, creditable considering that this sub-segment of the EV industry has the highest number of players – nearly 600 companies – all vying for a slice of the zero-emission action on three wheels only.
In CY2024, Montra Electric sold 6,055 Super Auto passenger 3Ws which gave it a 1% share of the record sales of 691,306 units.
Montra Electric’s vehicle of growth is its Super Auto passenger three-wheeler (L5M category), which won the International Red Dot Design Award in 2023 under the ‘Innovative Last Mile Mobility Electric Passenger Vehicle’ category. On August 21, 2024, the company had delivered its 5,000th Super Auto. Within the next 10-odd months, Montra Electric has sold another 5,000 units to surpass the 10,000-unit sales mark and thereby continued its strong growth trajectory.
The full metal-bodied Montra Super Auto, equipped with a 10.6 kWh battery, has a top speed of 55kph, does 0-20kph in 4 seconds, and develops peak power of 10kW and torque of 60 Nm. With a seating capacity of four including the driver, the Super Auto has a real-world range of over 160km on a single charge (certified range: 239km). Battery warranty is 5 years / 150,000km, while there’s free roadside assistance for the first year. Among the product highlights is industry-first multi-drive modes for enhanced fuel efficiency and a Park Assist Mode for seamless manoeuvring in city traffic.
Montra Electric is benefiting from its partnership with Exponent Energy, an energy-tech startup, which has a proprietary 15-minute rapid charging solution for the EV industry. The Montra Super Auto, equipped with Exponent’s 8.8 kWh e^pack, achieves a 0 to 100% charge in 15 minutes at Exponent’s e^pump charging network, while also having the ability to be slow charged at home.
In January this year, Montra Electric inked a partnership with Shriram Green Finance to offer financial solutions to buyers of electric three-wheelers and other EVs and two and more wheels.
