INDIA SALES: Top 10 Scooters in September 2016
Top two scooter brands – Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter – register their first-ever monthly sales milestones.
While the scooter market is achieving new highs with every passing month, it must be noted that Honda Activa has crossed the 300,000-unit monthly sales milestone for the first time ever.
HMSI has reported total sales of 301,529 units in September 2016, a YoY growth of 31.45 percent (September 2015: 229,382). The bestselling scooter brand is also the top selling two-wheeler marquee in the domestic market for the past nine months now.
TVS Motors’ 110cc Activa-rival, the Jupiter, which had notched its first-ever sales milestone of crossing 50,000-unit mark in August 2016, has now crossed the 60,000-unit mark in September.
The Chennai-based manufacturer has reported total sales of 60,943 units of the Jupiter in September 2016, registering a YoY growth of 24.71 percent (September 2015: 48,866).
At No. 3 is Hero MotoCorp’s Maestro brand with sales of 41,550 units which was a decline of 2.88 percent YoY (September 2015: 42,782).

Surging consumer demand for Honda’s 110cc Dio scooter model saw it take fourth place in the Top 10 list. With 33,248 Dios going home to new buyers, September 2016 sales were a 32 percent increase YoY (September 2015: 25,125).
Rising up in the list is Suzuki’s 125cc Access scooter, which has more than doubled its monthly volume on a YoY basis in September 2016. The model now holds fifth position for the last month on the back of sales of 26,417 units, up by 103.43 percent (September 2015: 12,986). It is to be noted that the all-new Suzuki Access launched earlier this year has clearly revived the sales volumes of the popular model, which has been a conventional rival to the Honda Activa for nearly a decade.
At sixth spot is the Duet – Hero’s family scooter model – which sold 25,168 units last month.

India Yamaha Motor is clearly gunning with surging demand for its scooter models. While the Ray (both variants – Ray Z and Ray-ZR) sold 23,158 units and occupied the seventh slot in the list, the Fascino is ranked eighth with total sales of 22,186 units during September 2016. In terms of YoY growth, while the Ray has recorded a jump of 115.08 percent, its sibling Fascino, which uses the same 113cc engine, has grown by a healthy 31.42 percent. In September last year, while the Yamaha Fascino had ranked sixth (sales: 16,882 units), the Ray was at eighth position (sales: 10,767 units).

Numbers are down by 14.51 percent YoY. The Pleasure, which recorded sales of 20,204 units in September last year, had ranked fifth in the list then.
Honda’s urban scooter model – the 110cc Aviator continues to perform steadily for the company. Ranking tenth for the last month, the model garnered sales of 11,683 units in September 2016, up by 17.90 percent YoY. Honda had sold 9,909 Aviator scooters in September last year, when it had ranked ninth in the list.
