Vimag Labs Secures Fifth Patent for Magnet-Free Electric Motor Platform

Vimag Labs has secured its fifth patent in India for its proprietary Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform, a software-defined electric motor architecture that does not rely on rare-earth permanent magnets. The patent, titled A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control, covers the core architecture of the company's magnet-free motor technology.

Unlike conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), the VMSM platform generates and controls its magnetic field in real time using power electronics and proprietary control algorithms, eliminating the need for embedded permanent magnets while retaining a brushless, slip-ring-free design.

"This patent is the outcome of over 87,600 engineering hours. It strengthens every dimension of our commercial roadmap — OEM partnerships, licensing, manufacturing scale-up, and future growth," said Manish Seth, Co-founder and CEO, Vimag Labs.

The latest patent expands Vimag Labs' intellectual property portfolio to five granted patents, with ten additional patents and fifteen trademarks currently in the pipeline. The portfolio covers motor architecture, software controls, power electronics and application-specific implementations.

The Bengaluru-based company said it is currently conducting pilot programmes with two-wheeler and passenger vehicle manufacturers and plans to extend deployments to light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles and industrial systems in the 200 kW-600 kW range. It is also developing applications for robotics, defence and cooling systems.

Vimag Labs recently raised USD 5 million in a Series A funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. The company has also signed a manufacturing memorandum of understanding with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support production scale-up of the VMSM platform.
