Vedanta Aluminium expands alumina refining capacity to 3.5 million tonnes per annum

Vedanta Aluminium, India's largest aluminium producer, announced a key step in its expansion plans on Thursday, commissioning a 1.5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) capacity increase at its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. This brings the refinery's total capacity to 3.5 MTPA, as the company pushes towards becoming a top three global player in aluminium production.

The expansion strengthens Vedanta's vertical integration strategy, as it aims to meet the growing demand for its aluminium products across sectors like autos, aerospace, and construction. Notably, the company offers a "green" aluminium range under the Restora brand, catering to the rising demand for sustainable materials.

Vedanta Aluminium is also a major producer of smelter grade alumina (SGA), a key raw material for its aluminium smelters in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhatisgarh). The expansion is expected to support the company's overall aluminium production ramp-up in the coming years, the company said.

John Slaven, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said "We are delighted to commission the expanded capacity which strengthens our raw material security and reduces costs for our Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards 100% vertical integration and strongly positions us for sustainable growth within the global aluminium market."
