Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd’s Punch and Nexon emerged as India’s two best-selling passenger vehicles in June 2026, helping the carmaker retain its position as the country’s second-largest passenger-vehicle manufacturer by retail registrations.

The Punch recorded 21,006 registrations during the month, while the Nexon followed with 18,335 units, according to model-wise data from Vahan. The two Tata SUVs finished ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which registered 17,899 units, and the WagonR, which recorded 16,952 units in June.

Strong demand for the Punch and Nexon helped Tata Motors register 56,450 passenger vehicles in June, an increase of 50.3% from 37,562 vehicles in the same month last year.

In June, the automaker held a 14.2% share of the passenger-vehicle retail market. It finished behind Maruti Suzuki, which registered 1,67,005 vehicles, but remained ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra at 53,114 units and Hyundai Motor India at 43,813 units.

On a wholesale basis, Tata Motors reported domestic passenger-vehicle dispatches of 62,076 units in June, up 67% year-on-year. Total sales, including exports, increased 69% to 63,083 units. Electric-vehicle dispatches more than doubled to 14,800 units and accounted for 23.4% of its monthly volumes.

Retail registrations and wholesales measure different stages of the sales cycle. Vahan records vehicles registered in customers’ names, while wholesales reflect vehicles dispatched by manufacturers to dealers.

Punch, Nexon Lead SUV Market

The Punch led the SUV market with 21,006 registrations, followed by the Nexon with 18,335 units. Mahindra’s Scorpio range was the third-largest SUV nameplate with 14,097 registrations, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Fronx at 13,135 units.

Hyundai’s Venue registered 10,776 units, while Mahindra’s XUV 3XO recorded 10,063 units. Maruti Suzuki’s Victoris followed closely with 10,035 registrations.

The Brezza registered 9,939 units, the Kia Seltos recorded 9,654 units and Mahindra’s XUV 7XO completed the list of the ten best-selling SUVs with 9,244 registrations.

The rankings underline the strength of compact and midsize SUVs in the Indian passenger-vehicle market. Seven of the ten leading SUVs recorded more than 10,000 registrations during the month.

Dzire Leads Other Models

Among the other leading passenger vehicles, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire ranked third overall with 17,899 registrations in June. The WagonR followed with 16,952 units, while the Ertiga recorded 16,111 registrations. The Swift registered 15,215 units.

The Scorpio and Fronx, which also featured in the SUV ranking, stood seventh and eighth respectively in the overall passenger-vehicle market.

The Baleno recorded 12,488 registrations and the Hyundai Venue completed the ten leading models with 10,776 units.

The presence of the WagonR, Swift, Dzire and Baleno in the overall top ten showed that hatchbacks and sedans continued to generate sizeable volumes even as SUVs dominated the broader market.

Maruti Remains Market Leader

Maruti Suzuki’s June retail registrations rose 36.1% year-on-year to 1,67,005 units from 1,22,680 units. Its retail share stood at close to 42%.

The company’s model portfolio remained widely represented in the top-ten chart. The Dzire, WagonR, Ertiga and Swift occupied four of the six positions immediately behind the Punch and Nexon. The Fronx and Baleno also featured among the ten largest-selling models.

Maruti’s domestic passenger-vehicle wholesales increased 23.7% to 1,47,187 units in June. Utility-vehicle dispatches, including the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Victoris and e Vitara, grew 28.7% to 61,726 units.

Mahindra’s retail registrations rose 19.9% to 53,114 units from 44,282 units a year earlier. The Scorpio, XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO were among the ten largest-selling SUVs.

The company separately reported domestic SUV wholesales of 60,393 units, an increase of 28% year-on-year. Total passenger-vehicle volumes, including exports, stood at 61,504 units.

Hyundai’s retail registrations increased 7.6% to 43,813 units from 40,709 units. The Venue was its only model among the ten largest-selling vehicles, while its retail performance remained below Tata Motors and Mahindra.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered 28,194 vehicles, up 14% from 24,729 units in June 2025. Kia India’s registrations increased 17.9% to 22,955 units, led by models including the Seltos.

Among the six leading manufacturers, Tata Motors recorded the highest year-on-year retail growth in June, followed by Maruti Suzuki.

The June performance also extended Tata Motors’ stronger run in the second half of FY26, when the Punch and Nexon had emerged as key volume drivers. Their position at the top of the June model chart shows that the momentum continued at the start of the new financial year.
