Tata Motors to Raise Prices of Cars and SUVs by Up to Rs 25,000 from September 1
The increase will cover both combustion and electric vehicles, with the extent varying by model and variant to maintain each offering's value proposition.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (TMPV) announced on August 21, 2026 in Mumbai that it will raise prices across its car and SUV portfolio, covering both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EV), by up to Rs 25,000, effective September 1, 2026. The increase is aimed at partially offsetting rising input costs and sustained inflationary pressures.
The extent of the price hike will vary across models and variants, the company said, to ensure the overall value proposition of each offering is maintained. TMPV added that it continues to absorb a significant portion of the cost increases, with only part of the impact being passed on to customers through this revision.
Q1 FY27 showed TMPV delivering strong sales momentum—domestic PV volumes rose 46% and EV sales more than doubled—but profitability collapsed. Revenue from operations stood at ₹20,667 crore, Profit Before Tax was ₹2,970 crore, and Profit for the Period was ₹2,556 crore.
Despite the topline growth, EBITDA margin contracted to 7.4% as raw material costs (steel, aluminium, batteries) surged, foreign exchange losses mounted, and supply chain disruptions hit Jaguar Land Rover. This mismatch between volume growth and margin pressure is the immediate backdrop for the September 1 price hike of up to ₹25,000 across SUVs and cars.
Commodity inflation and supply chain shocks were the decisive triggers. Rising input costs—particularly EV battery cells, which jumped ~10% quarter‑on‑quarter—eroded profitability, while FX revaluations and exceptional employee separation costs added further strain.
The auditors flagged that Tata Motors absorbed a significant portion of these increases but could not sustain margins without calibrated pricing actions. As a result, the SUV portfolio, which anchors Tata’s passenger vehicle strategy, will see selective hikes to restore balance between rising costs and customer value, ensuring the company can protect margins while maintaining competitiveness in a market where peers like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are also raising prices.
