Indian automotive suppliers embrace edge computing amid plummeting IoT costs and 5G rollout

Indian automotive component suppliers, including tier 2, 3, and 4 companies, are increasingly adopting edge computing technologies as the prices of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and cameras fall and 5G networks expand, according to Neelakantan Venkataraman, VP and global head of cloud and edge business at Tata Communications.

"It's a perfect storm," Venkataraman said, highlighting the critical role of cost efficiency in improving the return on investment (RoI) for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and auto component manufacturers.

Venkataraman's comments coincide with Tata Communications' recent launch of its automated computing platform, CloudLyte. The platform offers a comprehensive solution that integrates edge infrastructure with platform, network, and managed services, boasting assured uptime and versatility across sectors, including automotive and manufacturing.

As automotive businesses become increasingly interconnected and technologies such as 5G and IoT gain traction, the demand for real-time data processing, low latency applications, and intelligent decision-making is paramount. "In a hyperconnected world, businesses increasingly rely on resilient, performant, and secure edge computing capabilities," Venkataraman stated. "These are essential for managing the immense volumes of raw data generated and processing them swiftly and efficiently to enable rapid decision-making and foster accelerated business transformation."

The executive also emphasised that the combination of edge computing and a cloud-agnostic approach facilitates access to a wide range of connectivity options, including SD-WAN, Private 5G, and Wi-Fi. This approach bridges the gap between IT and OT silos, unifying the management, provisioning, and orchestration of resources and applications in multi-cloud environments.
