ICRA: Tractor Sales Grow in June, Monsoon Risks Cloud FY27 Outlook
ICRA expects wholesale tractor volumes, which rose 11.9% YoY in June 2026 on a low base and GST-led affordability gains, to see growth moderate to 1-4% in FY2027 amid a weak monsoon forecast and high base effect.
Tractor demand remained healthy in June 2026, with wholesale volumes rising 11.9% year-on-year and retail volumes climbing 25.3% YoY, according to ICRA. The growth was supported by a low base effect, steady farm cash flows, and improved affordability following the recent GST rate cut on tractors. However, ICRA noted that volume growth is expected to moderate over the rest of FY2027 due to the high base set in FY2026, lower kharif acreage, and a weak monsoon outlook that could weigh on farm incomes and replacement demand.
ICRA highlighted that the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) first-stage Long Range Forecast for the 2026 Southwest Monsoon projects below-normal rainfall at 90% ± 4% of the Long Period Average, attributed to anticipated El Niño conditions. Rainfall data from June 2026 already shows precipitation deficits across parts of central, southern, and coastal India. ICRA cautioned that prolonged shortfalls in rainfall could hurt kharif crop production and farm incomes, creating downside risks for tractor demand and sales in the coming months.
According to ICRA, domestic wholesale volumes are likely to see only modest growth over FY2027. Citing the second advance estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MA&FW) in March 2026, ICRA pointed out that both kharif and rabi foodgrain output for agricultural year 2025-26 rose 3% YoY, helped by favorable rainfall through calendar year 2025.
While minimum support price (MSP) mechanisms and government subsidies continue to support farm cash flows and tractor sales, ICRA said the combination of reduced kharif acreage and a below-normal monsoon could temper industry growth to a range of 1-4% for FY2027, against an elevated base from the previous year.
Despite the moderation in volume growth, ICRA expects tractor original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to maintain strong credit profiles. Margins are likely to stay healthy, supported by operating leverage and stable raw material costs, while ICRA said manufacturers' credit profiles should remain comfortable on the back of solid profitability, low leverage, and adequate liquidity.
