Sona Comstar Unveils Sculpture of Late Sunjay Kapur at Gurugram Plant on 55th Birth Anniversary
Priya S. Kapur and son Azarias Suri Kapur unveiled the sculpture on the grounds of Sona Enclave, with family, industry leaders and friends in attendance.
Priya S. Kapur and her son, Azarias Suri Kapur, unveiled a commemorative sculpture of the late Sunjay Kapur on the grounds of Sona Enclave at Sona Comstar’s Gurugram plant today, marking his 55th birth anniversary. Family members, industry leaders, friends and colleagues attended the memorial ceremony.
Sunjay Kapur played a role in transforming Sona Comstar from a single-product company into a global automotive technology player. He backed investment in electric mobility before the industry’s transition gathered pace. Through restructuring, deeper technology integration and a global strategy, he reshaped the company and strengthened its international ambitions.
Priya S. Kapur, Director and CSR Chairperson, Sona Comstar, said, “This sculpture has been a labour of love for me. Sunjay was larger than life, with an energy that filled every room. If he must stand anywhere, I am glad it is at Sona Enclave, because this was a place he loved.”
She added, “Sunjay was never one to follow a path. He created his own. When our horizon was mostly India, he saw our work running in vehicles across the world. And when electric vehicles were still a whisper on the horizon, he believed in them before the industry itself was ready. Sona Comstar was a single-product company focused on bevel gears. Today we have more than 29 different products across driveline systems, traction motors, sensors and advanced mobility technologies. He championed reforms and global collaborations that would benefit the wider industry, and he never stopped believing in the future of mobility through a globally integrated India.”
The ceremony began with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp and Vedic chants by children from Iskcon School, Vrindavan. Attendees watched a tribute film on Sunjay Kapur’s journey and heard family and friends share personal reflections and memories.
The early move into electric mobility led to higher investment in research and development and global competitiveness. Kapur also advocated reform and global collaboration to create opportunities for the wider industry. Outside business, he was a polo player, remembered by those who knew him for his warmth, wit, laughter and belief in teamwork.
Those present included Shraddha Suri Marwah, Sanjay Labroo, Vikrampati Singhania, Raja Kanwar, Kiran Deshmukh, Manav Kapur, Anmol Jain, Vinnie Mehta, Angad Kalaan, Uday Kalaan, Vivek Vikram Singh, Vikram Verma and Ranganathan Balaji, along with other friends and colleagues from the automotive and polo communities.
