Tata Motors Eyes Double-Digit Full-Year Growth as Price Hikes Help Offset 540-Basis-Point Commodity Drag

Tata Motors Ltd. is signaling continued double-digit expansion for India’s commercial vehicle sector in fiscal year 2027, even as an ongoing raw material cost drag and a high comparison base moderate growth rates in the second half.

The commercial vehicle manufacturing giant disclosed that raw material inflation, driven primarily by rising input costs in steel, rubber, tires, and non-ferrous metals, created an approximate 540-basis-point negative impact on operating margins during Q2FY27 compared to the prior-year period.

Even as the company increased vehicle prices multiple times in recent past, the executives indicated they will re-evaluate market conditions toward the end of the third quarter before deciding on further pricing adjustments for the fourth quarter.

"Our first line of attack is certainly the cost efficiency and within the cost, it is the variable cost because this is the larger portion of the cost and followed by the expenses, which is more of fixed costs. And then finally, it is the pricing," said Girish Wagh, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Ltd. "Every quarter we have also been taking calibrated price increase. So I think we have been doing this fine balance, ensuring that the demand momentum is not derailed."

Looking into the second half of fiscal year 2027, Tata Motors expects volume growth rates to cool from the 42 percent wholesale growth achieved in the second quarter. The anticipated deceleration stems from a high base effect created in the second half of fiscal 2026, when post-GST 2.0 commercial vehicle sales expanded by 21 percent in the third quarter and roughly 20 percent in the fourth quarter.

"So, while the growth momentum as of now is likely to continue in Q3, the growth rate will certainly moderate from a base effect perspective. So, not a demand slowdown, but the growth rate will go down," Wagh explained. "But as we stand here today, I think FY27 is likely to end with a double-digit growth for the overall industry."

Operational metrics across India’s transport sector reflect healthy underlying demand. E-way bill generation, fleet utilization levels, and automotive dispatches strengthened following monsoon-related slowdowns in July, supporting higher freight rates and improved transporter profitability. Additional tailwinds include sustained infrastructure execution, expanding mining output, and pre-festive inventory restocking.

Management identified interest rate trajectories, diesel fuel price fluctuations, and broader macroeconomic shifts as key monitorable for freight operators over the coming months.
