Festive Season Lifts Daily Bus Demand 30–50% on Key South India Routes: Fresh Bus Data
Analysis of over 6 lakh passengers finds bookings peaking two to three days before festivals, with Andhra Pradesh-bound corridors seeing the sharpest surge.
Daily passenger volumes on high-demand intercity bus routes in South India run 30–50% higher during the festive period than in a regular week, according to an analysis by electric bus operator Fresh Bus.
The company examined travel patterns of more than 6 lakh passengers across key corridors. It found that demand rises sharply in the days leading up to major festivals and reverses direction after the celebrations. Travellers combine visits home, pilgrimages and short leisure breaks around the holiday calendar, it said.
Andhra-bound corridors lead
Ahead of Dussehra and Diwali, routes linking major cities with Andhra Pradesh see a pronounced rise in outbound demand as working professionals and families head to their hometowns. The return flow then builds towards Hyderabad and Bengaluru once the festivities end.
Hyderabad–Vijayawada, Vijayawada–Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru–Tirupati were identified as the strongest corridors. The first two are driven largely by homebound travel, while Tirupati also draws pilgrimage traffic.
Leisure routes are also seeing seasonal shifts. Bengaluru–Pondicherry and Chennai–Pondicherry record more movement as travellers use extended holidays for short breaks, while Bengaluru–Chennai typically sees a sharper rise around Diwali.
Demand compressed into a shorter window
Unlike regular weeks, when bookings are spread more evenly, festive demand peaks two to three days before a festival and is followed by a strong return surge. Evening departures are among the first to sell out, which the company attributes to passengers finishing their workday before travelling. The data also suggests passengers are booking earlier, especially on routes where seats run short close to the festival.
"Festive travel in India has always been closely linked to going home, but what is changing is how concentrated and planned that movement has become," said Sudhakar Chirra, Founder and CEO of Fresh Bus. He added that leisure and "faithcation" travel are adding new layers to traditional homebound journeys, and that planning now requires understanding "where, when and why people are travelling" while maintaining reliability.
In response, Fresh Bus has raised its festive inventory from around 30 buses last season to more than 100 this year, allowing additional departures on the busiest corridors.
The company said the trends point to intercity mobility demand becoming increasingly purpose-driven, time-sensitive and corridor-specific.
