FADA: Commercial Vehicle Retail Sales Reach Record 90,972 Units in June as Rural Demand Outpaces Urban Markets
Commercial vehicle retail sales rose 16.88% year-on-year in June, with light commercial vehicles leading growth while electric vehicle penetration reached an all-time high.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported that commercial vehicle (CV) retail sales reached a record 90,972 units in June 2026, marking the highest-ever June performance for the segment. Retail volumes increased 16.88% year-on-year from 77,836 units in June 2025 and rose 8.53% over May's 83,823 units, supported by steady freight activity, infrastructure spending and improved vehicle availability.
LCVs Lead Segment Growth
Growth was led by the light commercial vehicle (LCV) category, which expanded 21.10% year-on-year to 57,031 units and increased 13.27% sequentially. Medium commercial vehicles (MCVs) registered the fastest month-on-month improvement, rising 27.31% to 9,714 units while recording 16.81% annual growth. Heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs), meanwhile, grew 8.26% year-on-year to 24,181 units but declined 6.26% from May, suggesting softer momentum in the heavier truck segment during the month.
FADA attributed the overall growth to continued freight movement, e-commerce-led logistics demand and normalising OEM supplies following easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The association noted that improving vehicle availability helped support retail deliveries across the country despite seasonal disruptions linked to the delayed monsoon.
Rural India Continues to Drive Growth
Regional data showed rural markets outperforming urban centres on an annual basis. Rural commercial vehicle registrations increased 21.63% year-on-year compared with 12.75% growth in urban markets. Sequentially, urban retail sales rose 12.02% over May while rural markets recorded a 5.04% increase.
The retail strength index also reflected the segment's predominantly urban character, with cities accounting for 51.6% of June registrations compared with 48.4% from rural India. Even so, the stronger annual growth in rural markets suggests expanding freight activity beyond metropolitan centres, particularly in agriculture, construction and regional logistics.
Electric CV Adoption Continues to Expand
Another notable trend during June was the continued growth in electric commercial vehicle adoption. EVs accounted for 3.53% of total commercial vehicle retail sales, up from 2.86% in May and 1.57% a year earlier, representing the highest EV penetration recorded in the segment so far.
Diesel remained the dominant fuel choice with an 80.18% market share, although this continued to decline gradually from 82.79% in June last year. CNG/LPG-powered commercial vehicles increased their share to 12.87%, while petrol-powered vehicles accounted for 3.39% of registrations. Hybrid vehicles remained negligible at 0.03%.
Tata Motors Retains Leadership
OEM-wise, Tata Motors remained the country's largest commercial vehicle retailer during June, registering 30,991 units and accounting for 34.07% of the market. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with a combined retail volume exceeding 25,000 units and approximately 27.5% market share, while Ashok Leyland retained third place with 15,337 units and a 16.86% share.
VE Commercial Vehicles retailed 7,937 units to account for 8.72% of the market, followed by Maruti Suzuki with 4,436 units, while Force Motors, SML Mahindra and Daimler India Commercial Vehicles rounded out the leading manufacturers.
Dealer Sentiment Remains Positive
Commercial vehicle retail sales reached 2.80 lakh units during the April-June quarter of FY2027, representing growth of 13.59% over the corresponding period last year. Looking ahead, FADA expects demand to remain supported by freight movement, infrastructure-led activity and improving supplies. However, the association noted that monsoon progress, financing turnaround times and the absorption of recent OEM price increases will continue to influence buying decisions over the coming months as the industry moves towards the festive season.
