India’s three-wheeler sales have surged in the first five months of the current fiscal to 102,115 up from 41,118 in the year-earlier period, SIAM said in its announcement last week of wholesales numbers.

While three-wheeler sales rose to 39,000 units in the month, production surged as well indicating the opening up of the economy, the increase in e-commerce business as well as the fact that people are taking to public transport in the form of autorickshaws that are also typically used for school transport.

SIAM’s numbers for the month of August indicate that three-wheelers passenger vehicles have surged. Leading the charge was Bajaj Auto and Piaggio which sold over 20,000 and 4,698 units respectively in the passenger segment. Over a five-month period, both companies have registered gains cumulatively selling over 85,000 passenger carriers.

Bajaj’s sales rose from 31,385 units in the April-August period to 66, 647 units, a rise of 112 percent. In the goods carrier, both companies did well too, and for the sector as a whole, 53 percent.

In the electric three-wheeler category, M&M has led the charge with sales of 6232 units, in the last five months and accounts for the highest share in a segment that is considered to be the first in the transition.
