Renault Duster Hybrid Launch Date Confirmed for October 17

Renault is set to launch the Duster strong-hybrid in India on October 17. The hybrid will become the third powertrain option for the midsize SUV, joining the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines.

Called the E-Tech hybrid system, the powertrain draws on technology and experience from Renault’s Formula 1 programme, according to the company.

Renault Duster Hybrid Gets 1.8-litre Petrol Engine

The Duster’s strong-hybrid system combines a 1,789cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors. One electric motor produces 20hp and acts as a generator, while the second produces 49hp and drives the wheels. Combined system output stands at 160hp and 172Nm.

The system is supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack and uses a multi-mode automatic transmission to send power to the wheels.

Renault E-Tech Differs from Toyota Hybrid System

The Duster’s E-Tech setup works differently from the full-hybrid system used by the Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara and Victoris.

While Toyota’s system uses an e-CVT and power-split device, Renault’s hybrid transmission uses fixed gear ratios and can shift between them. As a result, engine rpm can rise and fall more like a conventional automatic, with gear engagements possible as the system switches between electric drive, petrol-engine drive and combined operation.

The Duster also uses a larger 1.4kWh battery than the 0.60kWh unit used by the Toyota hybrid system.

Up to 80 Percent of City Driving in EV Mode

As with other strong hybrids, the E-Tech system can use electric power during low-speed driving, recover energy through regenerative braking and switch off the petrol engine when it is not required.

Renault claims that 80 percent of city driving can be completed in EV mode. Actual fuel efficiency will depend on factors such as traffic, speed, ambient temperature and driving conditions.

Duster Hybrid Rivals

The hybrid powertrain gives the Duster an alternative to the diesel engine option that is absent from the new-generation model.

It will compete directly with the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Victoris, all of which offer strong-hybrid powertrain options in the midsize SUV segment.

With the addition of the E-Tech system, the Duster will offer buyers three powertrain choices, giving Renault a broader powertrain spread in the segment.
