Lucas-TVS bags prestigious Deming Grand Prize

October 15, 2012: The Chennai-based Lucas-TVS Ltd, India’s largest automotive electrical equipment manufacturer and a member of the TVS Group, has been selected for the prestigious Deming Grand Prize for the year 2012 by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE). The award will be formally conferred in a special ceremony in November 2012 in Japan. The Deming Grand Prize is given to companies for the application of TQM (Total Quality Management) approach in all their business processes with a focus on customer orientation, continuous improvement and total employee involvement. The Deming examiners from JUSE carried out a critical three-day audit before recommending the company for the Deming Grand Prize.

Lucas-TVS, which supplies to virtually every vehicle manufacturer in the country and to four out of five vehicles that roll out daily from various OEM plants, has seven manufacturing plants in India. It launched the TQM movement in 1998 and secured the Deming Application Prize during 2004 for its TQM commitment, with distinction. By winning the Deming Grand Prize, the company now joins the elite group of 25 organisations worldwide which have been so far been awarded the Deming Grand Prize.

According to Dr N Ravichandran, CEO of Lucas-TVS, who has been in the forefront of the company’s TQM initiatives, “The Deming Grand Prize is another milestone in our TQM journey. This recognition enhances our responsibilities in meeting the growing expectations of our esteemed customers. But for the dedicated efforts and teamwork of our employees, coupled with the support of our customers, suppliers and other stakeholders, this recognition could not have been achievable. Our journey needs to continue to keep pace with the dynamic global standards.”

Lucas TVS, a Tier 1 supplier, is currently developing a host of niche products for export markets and is also considering setting up an assembly unit in S E Asia. For the full story, here
