Hyundai’s April sales down 10 percent

Hyundai Motor India clocked 44,001 units in domestic sales in April 2022, registering a 10.2 percent year-on-year decline compared to 49,002 units sold in April 2021.

The degrowth can be attributed to the global supply chain woes, which have put a spanner in the works for automobile OEMs that are scrambling for parts such as semiconductors.

HMI’s FY22 performance was also marginally better over FY21, registering a mere 2 percent growth to 481,500 units (FY21: 471,535). The Korean carmaker has been witnessing strong demand for some of its popular models – for instance, Hyundai Creta – which continues to have waiting periods of 8-12 months, depending upon variant and city.

The SUV sold 118,092 units last fiscal, averaging monthly sales of 9,841 units in FY22. Other models including the Hyundai i20 premium hatchback, Venue compact SUV as well as Aura compact sedan, particularly in its CNG trims, are witnessing strong demand. While other OEMs have flagged supply issues in the ongoing quarter, it remains to be seen how HMI manages component supplies and vehicle assembly at its plant in Chennai.
