ShinMaywa Industries Ltd of Japan and the Pune-based Kailash Vahan Udyog Ltd are to set up a joint venture to design, manufacture, sell and provide aftersales service for special purpose trucks including tippers and garbage compactors.
The new joint venture, Kailash ShinMaywa Ltd will be set up in Pune and aims to tap the demand for special vehicles and CVs, which is expected to be generated by India’s new infrastructure development projects.
Dr Kailash Gupta, chairman of Kailash Vahan Udyog, said: “We have two units in Pune. Kailash ShinMaywa will start operation in one of the units which Kailash Vahan will lease. The long-term plan is for the joint venture to set up its own facility.” According to him, the rationale behind the JV is to cater to Japanese truck manufacturers using ShinMaywa’s technology and Kailash’s infrastructure and local market expertise.
Talking about the evolution of the company, Dr Gupta said, “Kailash Vahan Udyog was primarily set up to make load bodies and sheet metal components for Tata Motors in Pune and for Ashok Leyland in Bangalore. But over the years we started making tipper bodies for LCVs and MCVs, garbage compactors, suction tankers, jetting machines, dumper placers, garbage tippers, trailers, car carriers, police vans and fully covered tippers. The company also handles auto and non-auto stampings and has a big heavy press shop catering to clients like Tata Motors and Fiat among others. Total steel processing capacity is about 20,000 MT per annum. We have a very good relationship with Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Eicher, Mahindra & Mahindra, Piaggio, Force Motors and other OEMs
in India.”
Diversifying into the car carrier business
Meanwhile, the company has recently entered into a joint venture with Rolfo of Italy for building car carriers. Talking about the alliance with the Italian firm, Dr Gupta said, “Rolfo is a European leader in vehicle transport solutions. The car market in India is growing at a very fast rate, despite the downturn. In addition, with the launch of the World Truck and many foreign CV manufacturers setting up shop in India, there is a potential market for chassis carriers.”
The company has other expansion plans up its sleeves. “Apart from JVs with ShinMaywa and Rolfo, we have also entered into a JV with Cramao of Italy to make cargo covering solutions in India. These include the Cramao-patented Cabriole and Tarp-All systems. We have also entered into a technical tie-up with Moro of Italy to provide liquid waste management solutions in India. These include products like suction tankers, jetting machines and combi-units,”
Dr Gupta concluded.
