Tesla Sales in India Cross 1,000 Units, 550 Model Ys Delivered Since July

American EV maker clocks retail sales milestone with a stellar performance in September when it sold 291 units to outsell Mercedes-Benz and become the second-ranked luxury EV maker after BMW. Demand for the Tesla Model Y has accelerated since July after its price was slashed by 900,000.

Tesla Sales in India Cross 1,000 Units, 550 Model Ys Delivered Since July

A little over 13 months after it entered the Indian market, American EV maker Tesla has driven past the 1,000-units sales milestone with its sole product, the Model Y. As per the latest retail sales data on the Vahan portal, Tesla India has clocked total deliveries of 1,017 units from September 2025 till October 2, 2026.

In September 2026, Tesla registered its highest-ever monthly sales of 291 units to mark a 322% YoY increase on a low year-ago base of just 69 units. Month-on-month growth was 149% over August’s 117 units (see Tesla sales data table below).

Fittingly enough, Tesla India’s highest monthly sales contributed to the Indian electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) segment’s record monthly retail sales of 35,995 units in September. This performance gave the American EV maker a 0.80% share of the record overall e-PV sales last month.

Importantly, by registering its highest monthly sales (291 units), Tesla India outsold Mercedes-Benz India (125 units) last month to snatch the No. 2 luxury e-PV rank for the first time. Luxury e-PV market leader BMW India sold 502 units for a 51% market share in September. In July, Tesla had gone past Volvo in India to take third place. As a result of its stellar sales of the Model Y e-SUV, Tesla’s market share jumped to 30% in September 2026 from 11% a year ago.

Between July and October 2, Tesla has delivered 554 Model Ys to its customers, which translates into 54% of its total sales coming in just the past four months. This, clearly, is the result of the massive Rs 900,000 price cut the Model Y received.

Tesla is benefiting from a sharp surge in demand for the Model Y after it slashed the price of the e-SUV by Rs 900,000 in end-June. Between July and October 2, Tesla has delivered 554 Model Ys.

Tesla Model Y Price Cut accelerates demand

From launch in September 2025 through till June 2026, monthly deliveries (retail sales) remained restricted to double digits with December 2025 (69 units) being the highest in that 10-month period. Sales jumped 203% month-on-month to 116 units in July (June 2026: 38 Model Ys) as a result of Tesla India slashing prices of the Model Y by Rs 900,000 to Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom) in June, increasing the product’s price competitiveness in the market. Before the massive price cut, the Tesla e-SUV had witnessed limited demand among potential buyers.

This pricing strategy, which is part of Tesla’s broader plan to expand its presence in the Indian market and compete with established luxury brand, has clicked with the value-conscious buyer. The Model Y’s new price-tag positions it well against rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7.

Tesla Model Y and Model Y L: Price, Range and Specs

The Tesla EV is available in a 5-seater (Model Y) and a 6-seater (Model Y L)iteration, priced between Rs 50.89 lakh and Rs 61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Choosing some customisations like a grey seat upholstery, a different exterior hue and autonomous driving features can, however, raise the prices by a considerable margin.

The 5-seater model’s lower-spec Premium RWD variant is offered with a 64kWh battery pack with a 500km (WLTP) range, paired with a 299hp electric motor. The higher-spec 5-seater Premium Long Range RWD variant gets a bigger 84.2kWh battery pack that has a claimed range of 661km (WLTP).

Battery pack size of the 6-seater Model Y L with a longer wheelbase is yet to be revealed. However, Tesla has disclosed that it comes with a dual-motor AWD setup and has a higher claimed range of 681km (WLTP).

Tesla Expands Sales and Charging Network in India

On September 25, Tesla India opened its sixth Experience Centre in Chennai and added to its existing showrooms in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The EV maker has also commenced service and bodyshop operations in Chennai to expand this offering to eight locations.

On the charging front, August saw Tesla India open its newest Destination Charging location at Lake Shore Thane, Mumbai featuring four Destination Chargers AC of 11 kW each. With this facility, Tesla now operates seven charging stations across India, including those in Navi Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram, equipped with 20 Superchargers and 24 Destination Chargers.
