Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles hit a new monthly high of 35,995 units in September. While market leader Tata Motors sold 14,769 units for a 41 percent market share, Vinfast, Kia and Toyota also recorded their highest sales. In the luxury e-PV segment, Tesla with 291 units outsold Mercedes-Benz to snatch the No. 2 spot below BMW.
September 2026, the half-yearly closing month of FY2027, saw deliveries of a record 35,995 electric passenger vehicles in India, and marked 98% YoY growth (September 2025: 18,520 units). While Vinfast maintained its fourth rank, Kia overtook Maruti Suzuki for fifth place. In the luxury EV segment, while BMW stayed on top, Tesla outsold Mercedes-Benz for the first time with its highest-ever sales and a 30 percent share of the luxury e-PV segment.

September (35,995 units) was the fourth month in a row of 30,000-plus retail sales and takes the H1 FY2027 total to 190,946 units, just 29,971 units shy of FY2026’s 220,917 e-PVs.
Tata Motors
14,769 units, up 101% YoY
Tata Motors sold 14,769 EVs last month, a 101 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth from 7,353 units. This is the company’s highest monthly sales yet and beats the 14,388 units in July 2026. It was the carmaker’s fourth consecutive month of 12,000-plus EVs sold, the first being June with 12,899 units, followed by 14,388 units in July and 13,806 units in August. Tata’s e-PV market share has risen to 41 percent from 40 percent a year ago. The Nexon EV remains Tata’s biggest volume driver, while the updated Tiago EV and Punch EV have drawn a large percentage of first-time EV buyers, particularly after petrol, diesel and CNG prices increased.
Mahindra & Mahindra
7,779 units, up 96% YoY
SUV specialist Mahindra & Mahindra, which has held the number 2 spot in the e-PV market since overtaking JSW MG Motor in March 2026, sold 7,779 EVs in September. This was a 96 percent increase from 3,972 units a year ago but still below the company’s highest monthly sales of 8,131 units in July. The company’s market share rose to 22 percent, up from 21 percent a year ago. The Mahindra BE 6 and XEV 9e continue to see strong demand, while the XEV 9S, the brand’s three-row born-electric SUV, has further strengthened its EV line-up.
JSW MG Motor
5,242 units, up 9% YoY
Third-ranked JSW MG Motor sold 5,242 e-PVs last month, up 9 percent YoY on 4,800 units in September 2025 and 6 percent up month on month (August 2026: 4,932 units). June remains its best month so far with 6,220 units. Year on year, as a result of the heightened level of competition, JSW MG Motor’s share of the e-PV market has fallen to 15 percent from 26 percent in September 2025, when it ranked second.
The Windsor EV continues to be MG’s bestselling model, but monthly sales could get a boost following the recent launch of the Hector Tomahawk EV. The three-row SUV is also offered with a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) option, reducing the upfront cost. The Hector Tomahawk EV is priced between Rs 19.50 lakh and Rs 23.49 lakh, ex-showroom (non-BaaS price range).
Vinfast
2,963 units
Vinfast India maintained its fourth position with its highest monthly sales since entering the Indian e-PV market a year ago. The EV maker retailed 2,963 units in September, giving it an 8 percent share of the e-PV market. This was a 32 percent increase over 2,239 units in August. Of the three models in its passenger vehicle portfolio, two are SUVs – the VF6 and VF7 – while the VF MPV 7, as its name suggests, is an MPV. Cumulative H1 FY2027 sales are 10,826 units.

Energised by the Syros EV, Kia recorded its best-ever monthly EV sales last month. In September, Kia sold 1,263 units, up 111 percent YoY and a 48 percent increase on August’s 851 units. With this performance, Kia with a 3.50% market share has risen to fifth position for the first time and gone ahead of Maruti Suzuki. The sustained sales increase follows the launch of the Syros EV in August. In the mass-market space, Kia also sells the Carens Clavis EV. Meanwhile, the EV6 and EV9 come to India as fully imported models.
Maruti Suzuki
1,103 units

Cumulative H1 FY2027 sales are 9,283 units.
Until now, domestic e-Vitara sales have been limited as a larger share of production was allocated for exports. This is expected to change with the start of production on Maruti’s new manufacturing line at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.
BYD
836 units, up 14% YoY
Seventh-ranked BYD sold 836 EVs in India last month, up 14 percent from 732 units in September 2025. June remains BYD India’s best month with 938 units. Along with the 35 units sold in June and 124 in July, total Ebella sales are 545 units in the current fiscal. The Urban Cruiser Ebella is the badge-engineered version of the Maruti e Vitara, although it is priced at a premium over the Maruti EV. It also rivals the Mahindra BE 6, Vinfast VF6, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV.
Citroen

Tesla, with best-ever monthly sales of 291 units in September, outsold Mercedes-Benz and moves into the No. 2 luxury e-PV rank for the first time. In July, the American EV maker had gone past Volvo in India to take third place. The record sales last month are a 322 percent YoY increase over the 69 units Tesla sold in September 2025.
