Electric Car and SUV Sales Cross 30,000 for the First Time in June
With Tata Motors selling a record 12,000 units and Mahindra hitting a new high of 7,645 e-SUVs, demand for e-PVs jumped 106% YoY to 31,253 units in June. While Maruti Suzuki, Vinfast and BYD also registered their highest monthly sales, luxury carmakers sold a record 801 units.
June 2026 has set the new retail benchmark for monthly sales in the electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) industry. At 31,253 zero-emission hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs delivered to buyers last month, June 2026 marks the first time that the e-PV industry in India has surpassed 30,000 units in a month. While year-on-year retails have more than doubled to 106% (June 2025: 15,203 units). The month-on-month growth of 12% beats the previous best of May 2026 (27,977 units).
June is the fifth month this year to register over 20,000 sales (see data table below). In fact, it is only the seventh instance of the e-PV industry crossing 20,000-unit sales after August 2025 (20,092 units), October 2025 (20,846 units), January 2026 (21,441 units), March 2026 (24,708 units), April (25,506 units) and May 2026 (27,977 units).

Month-on-month growth of 12% over May 2026 (27,977 units) ensures that June 2026 (31,253 units) is now the new benchmark for monthly sales of electric passenger vehicles in India.
Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra continue to power the Indian e-PV growth story. While Tata Motors sold over 10,000 units for the second month in a row and scaled a new high in June, M&M has registered 7,000 e-SUV sales for the first time and crossed 6,000 units for two straight months. That’s not all . . . Maruti Suzuki, Vinfast India and BYD India also registered their highest monthly retails since their market entry. And the eight luxury carmakers too scaled a new monthly high with 801 units. Let’s take a close look at the top players’ market performance in June 2026 which sets the pace for a record CY2026 and FY2027.
Tata Motors
June 2026: 12,023 units, up 125% YoY
e-PV market share: 38%
Tata Motors maintains its No. 1 status with a stupendous performance. In June 2026, the car and SUV manufacturer sold 12,023 e-PVs, up 125% YoY (June 2025: 5,355 units), marking the first time that it has surpassed 12,000 units and the second straight month of over 10,000 sales after the 10,865 units in May. This gives the company a 38% e-PV share, up three percentage points year on year.
While the Nexon EV continues to be Tata Motors’ volume driver, the launch of the updated Tiago EV in end-May has helped accelerate the momentum generated by the rollout of the new Punch EV in February this year. Both models draw a large percentage of first-time EV buyers albeit the new Tiago EV – India’s most affordable e-PV – is expected to draw new buyers transiting from ICE hatchbacks, particularly in the wake of the recent petrol-diesel price hikes. The MY2026 Tiago EV, which continues the brand’s draw of being the most affordable e-PV in India, should give Tata Motors plenty more ammo for higher sales and market share. Tata’s e-PV portfolio, which also includes the Harrier EV, Curvv EV and Tigor EV, has expanded with the launch of the Sierra EV which is expected to further up the ante for the e-PV market leader.
Mahindra & Mahindra
June 2026: 7,645 units, up 118%
e-PV market share: 24%
SUV manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra, which moved into the No. 2 position on the e-PV ladder-board in March 2026, registered its highest monthly sales in June when it surpassed 7,000 units for the first time. The 7,645 units are a 17% month-on-month increase (May 2026: 6,530 units) and give M&M a market share of 24 percent. Year-on-year growth is 118% (June 2025: 3,513 units)
While the BE 6 and XEV 9e, which were launched 16 months ago, continue to see demand, the XEV 9S, M&M’s first three-row, born-electric SUV launched last November, has given M&M a new charge. The XEV 9S, which has battery options spanning 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh, slots above the XEV 9e and BE 6, both of which are two-row EVs.
JSW MG Motor India
June 2026: 5,785 units, up 23%
e-PV market share: 18.51%
Third-ranked JSW MG Motor India sold 5,785 units last month, up 23% YoY (June 2025: 4,691 units). This gives it an 18.51% e-PV market share in June 2026, substantially down from the 31% it had in June 2025. The game-changing Windsor EV remains its best-selling product from a portfolio which includes the M9 MPV, Cyberster roadster, ZS EV and Comet EV.
Maruti Suzuki India
June 2026: 1,896 units
e-PV market share: 6%
India’s passenger vehicle and utility vehicle market leader continues to see MoM growth for its sole EV – the e-Vitara. As per Vahan, Maruti Suzuki delivered 1,896 e-Vitaras to new buyers in June, its highest monthly score since the launch of the e-SUV in January this year. With this, retail sales have crossed the 6,000 mark a month after factory dispatches (wholesales) surpassed 7,000 units in May. It is understood that due to production constraints, the company has allocated between 2,000-2,500 units for the domestic with far more for exports where the e-Vitara is the third most-exported SUV in the current fiscal. It is understood that the company, which has received over 4,000 bookings in India for the e-Vitara in the past month, plans to increase the zero-emission model’s production capacity from August or September this year.
Vinfast India
June 2026: 1,394 units
e-PV market share: 4%
Ranked fifth amongst the 18 e-PV manufacturers is Vinfast India. The local arm of Vietnamese EV major Vinfast also registered its highest-ever monthly sales in June – 1,394 units. This gives it a 4% e-PV market share.
Of the four models in its portfolio, two (VF6 and VF7) are SUVs and two (VF MPV 7 and VF Limo Green taxi) are MPVs. On the wholesales front (April-May 2026), the VF7 is outselling the VF6. For the two MPVs, the Limo Green e-taxi is witnessing far more demand than the VF MPV 7.
Vinfast will be looking to achieve higher sales traction when it launches the VF5 hatchback, which is likely to go head-to-head against the Tata Tiago EV or Punch EV, depending upon its specifications.
BYD India
June 2026: 860 units, up 69% YoY
e-PV market share: 3%
BYD India, the local division of China’s BYD, also scaled a new monthly high in June with 860 units, up 69% YoY (June 2025: 508 units). Its previous best was in October 2025 (615 units). One of the fillips for higher sales last month could be the fact that BYD is raising its EV prices by 1-2% from July 1, which is the second time this year. On May 1, sticker tags rose by Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000 covering the Atto 3 SUV, e-Max 7 MPV, Seal sedan and Sealion 7 SUV.
Meanwhile, the Chinese EV maker has confirmed plans to introduce the Seal U PHEV later this year. This strategic move will mark BYD’s entry into India's plug-in hybrid vehicle segment.
Kia India
June 2026: 446 units, up 792% YoY
e-PV market share: 1%
Ranked above Hyundai in June and below seventh-ranked BMW India (486 units), Kia India sold 446 e-UVs, up 792% YoY on a low year-ago base (June 2025: 50 units). Following the launch of the mass-market Carens Clavis EV MPV, which joined the far more expensive EV6 and EV9 imported as CBUs, Kia had seen its monthly numbers improve last year. What has helped draw buyers is the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option for the Clavis EV which slashes the eco-friendly MPV’s sticker price by over Rs 500,000 to Rs 12.84 lakh from Rs 17.99 lakh by separating battery ownership from the vehicle purchase. Buyers opting for the scheme pay a battery rental charge of Rs 3.3 per km, potentially making the electric MPV accessible to a wider set of buyers.
Hyundai Motor India
June 2026: 347 units, down 42% YoY
e-PV market share: 1%
Hyundai Motor India delivered 347 EVs last month, down 42% YoY (June 2025: 596 units) which translates into 249 fewer EVs year on year. The company, which has only two models in its EV portfolio (Creta Electric and Ioniq 5) continues to feel the heat of the intense competition in the e-SUV market where market leaders Tata Motors, M&M and JSW MG Motor have fast expanded their portfolios at multiple price-points to draw more buyers. As a result, Hyundai’s e-PV share is down to less than 1% from 4% a year ago.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor
June 2026: 32 units
e-PV market share: 0.19%
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the latest mainstream manufacturer to plug into the EV industry in India, delivered 32 units of the Urban Cruiser Ebella in June. The Toyota Ebella is the badge-engineered version of the Maruti e-Vitara and also rivals the Mahindra BE 6, Vinfast VF6, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV. The Ebella is currently sold in three variants (E1, E2 and E3) albeit priced at a considerable premium over its Maruti cousin.

Luxury Electric Carmakers Sell Record 801 Units in June
In tandem with the mass-market electric car and SUV OEMs, demand for luxury cars, SUVs and sedans also called a new monthly high in June. Retail sales of the eight OEMs in this sub-segment more than doubled YoY to 801 units (June 2025: 390 units). Month-on-month growth was 20% and beat the previous best of 665 units in May 2026. This strong performance continues to be driven by the top two OEMs – BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
BMW India, which topped the luxury e-PV category in FY2026 with a record 3,898 e-PVs and is ranked No. 7 amongst the 18 e-PV OEMs in June, maintained its No. 1 status with a record 486 units, up 101% YoY (June 2025: 2421 units), which gives it a 61% share for last month.
Mercedes-Benz India, with 234 EVs sold last month, more than doubled its sales as demand rose 107% YoY (June 2025: 113 units). The luxury carmaker registered strong growth on the back of the launch of the CLA electric sedan in end-April priced from Rs 55 lakh to Rs 59 lakh (ex-showroom). Based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) EV-first platform, the CLA EV replaces the combustion-powered A Class sedan, plus the EQA and EQB electric SUVs in India.

Strong demand saw both BMW and Mercedes-Benz double their sales YoY. These two German carmakers commanded 82% of the record 801 electric cars, sedans and SUVs sold in June.
Volvo India, which hiked the prices of its products by up to Rs 100,000 from May 1, citing ongoing global supply-chain challenges and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, sold 36 e-PVs in June 2026, up 38% YoY (June 2025: 26 units). This gives it a 4% share of the luxury e-PV market, down from the 7% it had a year ago.
Tesla, which has expanded its portfolio in India with the extended-wheelbase six-seater Model Y L, sold 35 units last month. This takes its cumulative sales in January0June period to 234 units. In an effort to draw more buyers to its first product in India – the Model Y e-SUV – Tesla India has slashed this e-SUV’s price to Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom), down by Rs 900,000. It remains to be seen if this strategy clicks in one of the world’s most price-sensitive automobile markets. Tesla India’s highest monthly sales to date were 69 units in September and December 2025.
While German sports car maker Porsche sold 8 units last month, Audi and Rolls-Royce sold one each while JLR did not sell a single EV last month, as per Vahan.
In terms of EV market penetration, these eight luxury EV OEMs had a 2.56% share of the record 31,253 e-PVs sold in June 2026.
