Toyota Kirloskar Motor Reports 11% Y-O-Y Growth in August
Toyota's success reflects its strategic positioning in India's evolving automotive landscape. The company dominates India's hybrid vehicle segment, accounting for over 79% of hybrid sales in the country.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 34,236 units in August 2025, marking an 11% increase from the same period last year, as India's automotive sector prepares for what industry executives hope will be a recovery during the upcoming festive season.
However, the Japanese automaker's performance comes at a time when the Indian auto market faces uncertainty ahead of potential GST rate cuts that could influence consumer demand. Nevertheless, Toyota's August sales comprised 29,302 units in the domestic market and 4,934 units for export, maintaining the company's focus on both local consumption and overseas markets.
Moreover, the growth trajectory extends beyond monthly figures. Toyota's cumulative sales for the first eight months of 2025 reached 241,696 units, representing a 14% increase compared to 212,785 units during the same period in 2024.
Indeed, Toyota's success reflects its strategic positioning in India's evolving automotive landscape. The company dominates India's hybrid vehicle segment, accounting for over 79% of hybrid sales in the country during FY2025, with models like the Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder driving demand in this niche but growing segment.
Consequently, this hybrid focus has helped Toyota reduce its dependence on diesel vehicles while capitalizing on consumer interest in fuel-efficient alternatives. Hybrid vehicles contributed 2.7% to India's passenger vehicle mix in FY2025, a small but significant segment where Toyota maintains clear leadership.
Meanwhile, the company's product portfolio saw expansion in August with the launch of the Camry Hybrid Electric Vehicle Sprint Edition and the introduction of a new Bluish Black exterior color for its Urban Cruiser Taisor compact SUV, which now features six airbags as standard across all variants.
Market Context
Despite these achievements, Toyota's performance stands against a backdrop of mixed signals in India's passenger vehicle market. Industry data shows wholesale volumes grew 8.9% sequentially in July 2025, though year-over-year growth remained flat at around 301,000 units, suggesting underlying demand challenges that manufacturers hope the festive season will address.
In addition to its sales performance, the company's milestone achievements include the Innova nameplate completing 20 years in India, having served over 1.2 million customers. Furthermore, Toyota strengthened its export capabilities by renewing its agreement with Kamarajar Port Limited, reinforcing its commitment to India as both a manufacturing and export hub.
Given these market dynamics, Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President of Sales-Service-Used Car Business at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, acknowledged the current market situation while expressing cautious optimism. As a result, the company plans to focus on value-added services during the festive season to support customer purchase decisions.
Currently, Toyota operates two manufacturing plants in Bidadi with a combined installed capacity of up to 342,000 units. These facilities produce vehicles ranging from the Innova series and Fortuner to hybrid models like the Camry and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, while also importing premium models like the Vellfire and Land Cruiser 300.
Ultimately, the August performance positions Toyota to potentially achieve record annual sales, building on momentum that has seen the company consistently grow its market presence in India's competitive automotive sector.
