The Altroz, Tata Motors’ first premium hatchback, has turned five years old today. Launched on January 22, 2020, the Tata Altroz has, till end-December 2024, sold an estimated 288,957 units in the Indian marketplace. This means the Tata Altroz is 11,043 units away from achieving the 300,000-unit milestone.
The Altroz is currently available in as many as 43 variants (26 petrol, 9 diesel and 8 petrol-CNG) with 1.2 petrol, 1.2 turbo petrol and 1.5 diesel engines. The car’s pricing ranges from Rs 800,000 (1.2 petrol Revotron XE manual) through to Rs 12.60 lakh (1.2 XZ+O (S) CNG MT. The Altroz CNG’s pricing starts at Rs 889,000 for the 1.2 CNG XE MT (all prices, on-road Delhi).
The stylish, high-on-value hatchback raced past the 50,000-unit sales mark within a year of launch. Then, 10 months later, on September 21, 2021, the 100,000th Altroz rolled out from Tata Motors’ Pune plant. The 200,000-unit sales milestone was surpassed in June 2023, 42 months after launch.
The Altroz CNG debuted the carmaker's new dual-cylinder setup for CNG tanks and was, at the time, the first CNG-powered hatchback in India to sport a sunroof.
The Altroz, which is part of Tata Motors’ ‘New Forever’ range along with the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Punch, Harrier and Safari, continues to make a sizeable contribution to the company’s growth over the past five years. Since FY2021, the Altroz with 280,499 units (April 2020 onwards) has contributed 13% to the company's total passenger vehicle sales of 2.14 million units and 38% of its passenger car sales of 733,142 units till end-December 2024.
The Altroz’s best fiscal year was FY2024 when it sold 70,162 units, up 21% YoY (FY2023: 57,819 units) and was the second best-selling hatchback for Tata Motors after the Tiago (85,478 units). It is the same scenario in the current fiscal – the Altroz has sold an estimated 29,892 units in the April-December 2024 period compared to the Tiago’s 47,527 units. Both siblings have three variants each – while the Altroz (petrol, diesel, CNG) does not have an EV variant yet, the Tiago (petrol, CNG, electric), the Tiago does not have a diesel.
On the annual sales front, Tata Motors achieved its best-ever calendar year wholesales in CY2024 – 562,468 units – to which the Altroz, which remains one of the nicest-looking hatchbacks in India, contributed an estimated 45,380 units or 8 percent.
