Ten days after it revealed the premium Altroz i-Turbo hatchback variant along with iRA-connected car technology, Tata Motors today officially launched it priced at Rs 773,500. This pricing, according to the company, is an introductory ex-showroom price increment of Rs 60, 000 above the Altroz Revotron petrol variants.

The car which completes one year since its launch on January 22, 2020, has now been equipped with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, in addition to the 1.2-litre, 86bhp naturally-aspirated petrol motor and the 1.5-litre 89bhp diesel.

Tata Motors today confirmed that the Altroz has crossed the 50,000-units sales landmark in the domestic market. As per Autocar Professional's analysis, total sales of the Altroz from January 2020 through to end-December 2020 were 47,076 units, comprising 44,427 petrol and 2,649 diesel. This translates into average monthly sales of nearly 4,000 units, and in turn means the 50,000-unit sales milestone has been crossed within a year of launch.

Christened ‘iTurbo’ (i for Intelligent), the BS VI-compliant petrol engine develops 109bhp at 5500rpm and 140Nm of peak torque between 1500 and 5000rpm. The engine has been mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and claims 18.13kpl on the Indian Driving Cycle. While Tata Motors is believed to be also working on a DCT drivetrain to go along with the turbo-petrol engine, the company didn’t make any official announcement on it as yet.

The new engine develops 28 percent more power and 24 percent more torque compared to its natural-aspirated counterpart, and is claimed to offer much superior performance as the overall weight of the hatchback remains almost similar. As a result, the company hasn’t made any major changes to the other mechanical elements of the car such as the suspension, steering or brakes.

While the regular Altroz gets ‘Eco’ and ‘City’ driving modes as standard, the Altroz iTurbo gets the City and a new ‘Sport’ driving mode as the new engine mapping options on the updated car.

Commenting on the launch of the Altroz i-Turbo, Shailesh Chandra – President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “We are thrilled to celebrate the first anniversary of our premium hatchback Altroz with a double bonanza comprising of the i-Turbo petrol and the new XZ+ variant with iRA-connected car technology in petrol and diesel options. Since the launch in January 2020, the Altroz has been appreciated for its paramount safety, innovative design and thrilling performance. We are delighted to share that with its introduction, in FY2021, our market share in the hatchback category has increased by 5.4% compared to FY2020 and we have captured 17% market share in the premium hatch segment. We are confident that the new Altroz range will cater to the evolving needs of the Indian customer, all while creating benchmarks in the segment.”

The Altroz, which aced the Global NCAP crash test with a five-star rating last year, has benefited from the growing safety consciousness amongst Indian car buyers.
