India’s scooter industry has readied itself for a stupendous performance in the festive season, which has commenced in September. The 10 scooter manufacturers delivered a record 855,715 units to their showrooms in August 2026, up 31% YoY (August 2025: 691,430 units).
This beats the previous best in October 2025 (824,003 units) which was, till last month, the sole instance when monthly scooter wholesales had surpassed the 800,000 milestone.
That’s not the only news from August. At 60,72,166 units, cumulative scooter sales for the first eight months of this year have crossed the 6-million mark and registered handsome 31% YoY growth (January-August 2025: 691,430 units).
E-scooter wholesales, at 188,714 units (up 131% YoY) also posted a new high in monthly penetration level: 22 percent. Clearly, August’s record monthly scooter volumes can be attributed to the highest-ever monthly dispatches of electric scooters.
Honda Reclaims Scooter Market Leadership from TVS
Long-standing scooter market leader Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, outsold by TVS Motor Co for the first time in July 2026, has bounced back into the lead to reclaim the crown it temporarily lost. In August, HMSI factories dispatched 285,527 units to showrooms across the country, posting 6% YoY growth (August 2025: 269,923 units). This total comprises 283,485 Activa 110/125 and Dio 110/125 ICE scooters (up 5% YoY) and 2,042 EVs (Activa-e and QC1).
Honda had a market share of 33% last month, ahead of TVS Motor Co’s 30%, but down on its year-ago share of 39 percent.
TVS, Suzuki, Hero, Bajaj, Yamaha: OEM-wise Scooter Sales in August
TVS Motor Co dispatched 256,442 scooters last month, up 24% YoY (August 2025: 206,598 units) for a 30% market share, which is the same a year ago. The company, whose ICE portfolio comprises the Jupiter, NTorq and Zest, sold 198,919 of these petrol-engined scooters, up 9% YoY.
This includes 11,958 units of the NTorq 150 in its first month of sale. TVS’ monthly sales continue to benefit from its two EVs – the iQube and Orbiter – which added 57,523 units, up 135% YoY.
Ranked third among the 10 OEMs is Suzuki Motorcycle India with 101,267 scooters, up 11% YoY, and a 12% share. The Access 125 remains its best-selling product, ahead of the Avenis and Burgman Street, which are also powered by the same 125cc engine. The e-Access, Suzuki’s sole EV, sold 668 units in August.
Hero MotoCorp dispatched 72,150 scooters last month, up 49% YoY, giving it an 8% market share and improving on the 7% of August 2025. The sales comprise 46,592 units (up 29%) of the three ICE scooters (Destini 125, Pleasure and Xoom) and 25,558 Vida e-scooters (up 108%). Like TVS, Hero MotoCorp is also benefiting from the sustained demand for its Vida EVs.
Bajaj Auto, which produces the electric Chetak and Yulu models, sold 53,748 e-2Ws in August, up 279% YoY (August 2025: 14,164 units). The high YoY growth is due to the company’s production and sales hampered last year by supply chain issues.
India Yamaha Motor (34,279 units) registered 23% growth for a 4% market share. Yamaha sold 30,193 units of its 125cc-engined Fascino and Ray ZR, up 18% YoY. Demand for the 155cc Aerox scooter (9,650 units) however jumped 167% YoY (August 2025: 3,611 units).
Yamaha, the last of the Japanese OEMs to enter the e-scooter arena, dispatched 475 units of the EC-06 to its premium Blue Square showrooms last month.
Ather, Greaves, River Mobility, Piaggio Round Off the Top 10
EV start-up Ather Energy, which launched its mass-market family scooter Konarc on August 29, sold 29,694 units in August, up 30% YoY, for a 3% overall scooter market share.
Greaves Electric Mobility, the EV arm of engineering major Greaves Cotton, is the newest SIAM member. The company has reported dispatches of 12,439 e-scooters last month, up 114% YoY (August 2025: 6,635 units).
River Mobility, which currently manufactures a single product (Indie e-scooter), dispatched a record 6,567 units in August, up 195% YoY and 9% month-on-month (July 2026: 6,039 units).
Piaggio Vehicles, which markets the Aprilia and Vespa scooter brands, wraps up the Top 10 Scooter OEM list with wholesales of 3,602 units, up 38% YoY (August 2025: 2,602 units).
E-scooter Sales Hit Record 188,714 Units, 22% Penetration
With a record 188,714 e-scooters, August 2026 sees the EV penetration level in the segment rise to 22 percent. January-August wholesales at 1.08 million units have jumped up 90% YoY.
Given the growing shift in consumer transition from petrol-engined scooters to their zero-emission electric cousins amidst high petrol prices as well as the concern about E20 fuel, every scooter manufacturer worth its wheel has to have a footprint in EVs. While each of the 11 scooter OEMs in the sales table above have electric scooters in their portfolio, four OEMs are solely EV makers.
Recognising the customer trend and ahead of the festive season, these OEMs ensured that their showrooms are well stocked with the popular models. Not surprisingly, August 2026 saw the highest- ever monthly dispatches by scooter OEMs to their showrooms.
The 188,714 units are a 131% YoY increase (August 2025: 81,721 e-scooters) and take cumulative January-August 2026 wholesales to 1.08 million units, up 90% YoY and also going ahead of entire CY2025 dispatches of 981,946 units.
The record e-scooter wholesales (188,714 units) in August translate into a 22% penetration level for the overall 855,715 ICE+EV scooters sold last month. Suffice it to say that EVs have helped the segment achieve the big number.
TVS, Bajaj, Ather Lead Electric Scooter Sales Rankings
Electric 2-W market leader TVS Motor Co dispatched 57,523 iQubes and Orbiters to its showrooms across India, up 135% YoY but down 3% on its record monthly sales of 59,386 e-2Ws in July. This performance gave TVS a 20% EV penetration rate in its scooter sales and a 30% e-scooter market share.
As it did in Q1 FY2027, every fifth TVS scooter sold in January-August 2026 was electric. Of the 1.80 million scooter wholesales (up 28% YoY), TVS e-scooters account for 371,627 units (up 84% YoY).
Clearly, it is the two e-scooters that are giving an aggressive TVS a sustained shot of sales power and drawing it closer to Honda in the overall scooter market stakes.
Bajaj Auto, which manufactures and markets Chetak and Yulu e-scooters, clocked wholesales of 53,748 units, up 279% YoY (August 2025: 14,164 units), giving the Pune-based major a 28% market share. The sales comprise 52,248 Chetaks and 1,500 Yulu EVs.
Ather Energy dispatched 29,694 units to its dealers last month, which saw the smart e-scooter maker launch its most affordable model the Konarc, with the base model priced at Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom).
The first scooter based on Ather’s new EL platform and also the first with a metal body, it remains to be seen if the Konarc eats into sales of the Rizta, the company’s best-selling model, and also takes on the high-selling TVS iQube, Orbiter and Bajaj Chetak.
Hero Vida, Greaves Ampere, River Indie Post Strong EV Growth
Fourth-ranked Hero Vida, which expanded its Vida line-up in mid-July with the new VX2 Plus (4.4 kWh) variant priced at Rs 143,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), continues to register strong numbers. Last month, it more than doubled its sales YoY to 25,558 units.
Greaves Electric Mobility, which manufactures Ampere e-scooters, takes fifth rank in the e-scooter category with 12,439 units, up 114% YoY. Demand has risen following the launch of the new Ampere Magnus Neo, a lighter and redesigned variant aimed at urban commuter buyers in April and the upgraded version of its Magnus G Max in early August.
GEM’s EV portfolio comprises the Nexus (EX and ST), Magnus (G Max, Grand, Neo) and Reo 80 brands.
River Mobility, which is now a regular in the monthly Top 10 e-2W retail sales chart, dispatched a record 6,567 Indie e-scooters, up 195% YoY on the 2,229 units it clocked a year ago.
The three Japanese e-scooter OEMs – Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha – sold a total of 3,185 units in August which includes a monthly best of 2,042 units for Honda.
Overall Two-wheeler Sales Cross 2 Million Units in August
The stellar performance of the scooter segment (ICE and EV) last month ensured that overall 2W sales (scooter, motorcycles and mopeds) hit a new high for the month of August – 2 million units.
