Maruti Jimny Crosses 150,000 Sales Since Launch, 80% Comprise Exports

Launched in June 2023, the Maruti Jimny five-door SUV has sold 158,678 units till January 2026, with exports (127,442 units) far outpacing sluggish domestic sales (31,236 units), which account for just 20% of total volume.

Cumulative domestic and export market sales of the Maruti Jimny have crossed the 150,000-unit mark. Thirty-two months after it was launched in India in June 2023, the lifestyle and premium off-roader has clocked total sales of 158,678 units till end-January 2026 (see data table below).

In stark contrast to its tepid sales performance in India – 31,236 units and 20% share of total sales), the Jimny’s exports – 127,442 units and 80% of total sales – constitute massive success for Maruti Suzuki India and have helped power the company’s record export sales.

While the domestic market response to the five-door Jimny continues to be tepid at 31,236 units, the 127,442 units shipped overseas and led by Japan account for 80% of total sales till January 2026.

In the current fiscal’s first 10 months, the Jimny’s wholesales in India (5,487 units) are down 32% YoY (April 2024-January 2025: 8,094 units). Of the 17 passenger vehicles in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio, the Jimny is the second lowest-selling model after the Invicto MPV (2,913 units) and accounts for a minuscule 0.36% share of the company’s 1,495,910 passenger vehicles sold between April 2025 and January 2026.

In comparison to domestic market sales, the Jimny’s export performance continues to shine and how. The 57,269 units dispatched overseas in the first 10 months of FY2026 are a handsome 41% YoY increase (April 2024-January 2025: 40,674 units).

This makes the Jimny the second highest-selling export model for Maruti Suzuki after the Fronx (75,183 units, up 33%) and gives it a 16% share of the company’s passenger vehicle exports of 358,953 units (up 32% YoY) in FY2026 YTD. With export numbers for February and March 2026 yet to come in, expect the Jimny to clock total FY2026 exports of around 73,000 units, which will be a 52% increase over its FY2025 exports of 47,982 units.

The made-in-India five-door Jimny has benefited from strong demand in Japan where the SUV is sold as the Suzuki Nomade.

JAPAN POWERS EXPORT DEMAND FOR MADE-IN-INDIA 5-DOOR JIMNY
In October 2023, five months after it launched the Jimny in India, Maruti Suzuki commenced exports of the five-door Jimny to key overseas markets including Latin America, Middle East and Africa and immediately received a strong market response from Mexico, Australia and South Africa.

It is to be noted that from November 2020, Maruti Suzuki had been producing the three-door model exclusively for export to both left- and right-hand-drive markets in Africa and the Middle East from its mother plant in Gurgaon, Haryana.

The made-in-India Jimny 5-Door’s exports received a strong growth accelerator when on January 30, 2025, Suzuki Motor Corp unveiled the model in Japan as the ‘Nomade’ ahead of the planned official launch on April 3. The introduction of this legendary 4WD SUV in Japan marked an important step in Maruti Suzuki’s export journey as it became the second SUV after the Maruti Fronx to be supplied to the home market of Suzuki Motor Corporation in FY2025.

The massive customer demand in Japan for the five-door Jimny 5-door caught Suzuki Motor Corp by surprise. In just four days after bookings opened, the company received over 50,000 pre-orders and it was compelled to temporarily halt bookings for this made-in-India model, the first-ever five-door avatar of the legendary off-roader which is exclusively manufactured in India.

Since then, as a result of strong and sustained demand for both the Fronx and the Jimny, Japan has transformed into Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market and the largest one for the Jimny, followed by Mexico, Australia, South Africa and Chile.
