Two years into its presence in the Indian SUV market, the five-door Maruti Jimny has clocked sales of 100,000 units. As per SIAM wholesales numbers, cumulative sales of the Jimny since launch are 102,024 units. This total comprises 26,180 units in the domestic market (from launch to end-April 2025) and 75,844 units (from launch till end-April 2025) dispatched to overseas markets (see data table below).
While the domestic market response to five-door Jimny has been tepid at just 26,180 units, the 75,844 units shipped overseas led by Japan account for 74% of total sales till April 2025.
First revealed at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi, the Maruti Jimny was launched in India on June 7, 2023 aiming to attract lifestyle off-roader buyers. The Jimny essentially is a body-on-frame 4X4 SUV developed for off-roading and, in its three-door avatar, has been a smash hit in global markets for its design and off-roading prowess. This, along with the Mahindra Thar’s success in India, prompted Maruti Suzuki to introduce this niche off-roader through its premium Nexa channel.
The five-door Jimny, which is a longer version of the original Suzuki off-roader, was specifically developed for India to seat four adults as a measure to widen its appeal in a value-conscious market. Sold from the company’s premium Nexa channel, the five-door Jimny rolls out of Maruti Suzuki India’s Gurugram plant which is the global mother production facility for the SUV.
The Jimny is powered by a sole 105hp, 134 Nm, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. However, unlike Maruti’s remaining line-up in India, which has moved on to the newer K15C engine, the Jimny uses the older-spec K15B engine. Maruti Suzuki claims a fuel efficiency of 16.94kpl for the manual variant, while the automatic variant returns a mileage of 16.39kpl.
The Jimny’s early promise of having garnered over 30,000 bookings in the five months between the Auto Expo reveal and market launch did not, however, translate into purchases in the domestic market.
While the Jimny, which is a nimble, true-blue off-roader, its small dimensions would likely disappoint someone looking to make a statement. What also doesn’t help is the lack of creature comforts – as simple as bottle holders inside the cabin – as well as the lack of outright power from the naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine. With a heavy recirculating ball steering setup and a wide turning circle, the Jimny is also difficult to manoeuvre inside the city, where most urban folks use their modern SUVs.
In start contrast to the Jimny’s sales performance in India, the export story is a huge success as a result of massive demand from Japan.
As per SIAM wholesales numbers, cumulative sales of the Jimny since launch are 102,024 units. This total comprises 26,180 units in the domestic market (from launch to end-April 2025) and 75,844 units (from launch till end-April 2025) dispatched to overseas markets. The made-in-India five-door Jimny has benefited from strong demand in Japan where the SUV is sold as the Suzuki Nomade.
JAPAN POWERS EXPORT DEMAND FOR MADE-IN-INDIA 5-DOOR JIMNY
In October 2023, five months after it launched the Jimny in India, Maruti Suzuki commenced exports of the five-door Jimny to key overseas markets including Latin America, Middle East and Africa and received a strong market response from Mexico, Australia and South Africa.
It is to be noted that from November 2020, Maruti Suzuki had been producing the three-door model exclusively for export to both left- and right-hand-drive markets in Africa and the Middle East from its mother plant in Gurgaon, Haryana.
The made-in-India Jimny 5-Door’s exports received a strong growth accelerator when on January 30, 2025, Suzuki Motor Corp unveiled the model in Japan as the ‘Nomade’ ahead of the planned official launch on April 3. The introduction of this legendary 4WD SUV in Japan marked an important step in Maruti Suzuki’s export journey as it became the second SUV after the Maruti Fronx to be supplied to the home market of Suzuki Motor Corporation in FY20225.
The massive customer demand in Japan for the five-door Jimny 5-door took Suzuki Motor Corp by surprise. In just four days after bookings opened, the company received over 50,000 pre-orders and was compelled to temporarily halt bookings for this made-in-India model, the first-ever five-door avatar of the legendary off-roader.
The Maruti Fronx (69,133 units) and the Jimny (47,982 units) were the top two made-in-India SUVs exported in FY2025.
FRONX AND JIMNY ENSURE MARUTI SUZUKI IS PV EXPORTER NO. 1
The stellar performance of the Jimny in export markets, along with that of the Maruti Fronx, has helped Maruti Suzuki maintain its crown of India’s No. 1 passenger vehicle exporter for four fiscals in a row.
In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki exported a record 330,081 passenger vehicles including a doubling of its UV exports to 157,000 units (from 77,927 units in FY2024). The Fronx (69,133 units) and the Jimny (47,982 units) were the top two SUVs exported from India and accounted for 44% and 31% of the company’s UV overseas shipments respectively last fiscal.
The two Maruti SUVs have maintained that ranking in the first month of FY2026. April 2025 SUV exports were led by the Fronx (7,055 units) and Jimny (5,671 units).
