The key reason for the electric commercial vehicle (e-CV) segment registering a 10% year-on-year increase in retail sales to 7,054 units in January-July 2025 is the strong showing of the light goods carrier sub-segment, comprised of zero-emission small CVs and LCVs. This total is 70% of the 10,076 units sold in all of CY2024, indicating that India e-CV Inc is well on its way to set a new annual sales benchmark this year.
Between May and July, the e-CV industry in India has clocked 1,000-plus unit retail sales for three straight months. July sales of 1,248 units are the second highest monthly sales after the FAME II-ending March 2024’s 2,156 units.
As it did in CY2024, the light goods carrier sub-segment continues to be the growth driver in the current year. The 4,403 units (e-SCVs and e-LCVs) sold between January and July 2025 are a 15% YoY increase and account for 62% of the e-CVs sold, up from the 59% a year ago. This has come about as a result of a rollout of a fair number of new models as well as being the eco-friendly option for intra-city and inter-city operations.
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have 43% share of e-SCV/LCV retails
As per Vahan data, Maharashtra is the leading buyer of e-LCVs, with 813 e-SCV/LCV goods carriers sold in the state between January and July 2025 and accounted for 18% of the total 4,403 such vehicles sold in the first seven months of this year. However, sales for this western India state, which is a key driver of the Indian economy, are down 3% year on year.
Tamil Nadu (725 e-LCVs) is second with a 16% share, followed by Karnataka (403 units / 9% market share). Delhi, another state where demand is picking up for e-LCVs and currently ranked fourth, accounts for 382 units, down 1% YoY and has a near-9% e-LCV market share in India.
The fifth-ranked Uttar Pradesh has seen a sharp sales decline of 48% YoY to 299 units from 577 in the January-July 2024 period. In comparison, Rajasthan (250 units, up 112%), Kerala (224 units, up 124%), Odisha (217 units, up 171%) and Haryana (193 units, up 264%) have witnessed strong sales in the first seven months of this year.
