The Alcazar, Hyundai Motor India’s flagship SUV, turns four years old today. Launched on June 18, 2021, the three-row, well-appointed midsize SUV is based on the Creta, the company’s best-selling product and packs the strengths of India’s No. 1 midsize SUV along with the flexibility of six or seven seats. From launch to end-May 2025, 129,440 Alcazars have rolled out of the company’s Chennai plant and sold a total of 128,419 units, comprising 92,414 units in the domestic market and 36,005 units as exports (see sales data table below). At 92,414 units sold in India, the Alcazar is 7,586 units away from the 100,000 milestone. FY2023 remains its best fiscal year yet – 38,394 units produced, 26,696 units sold in India and 11,334 units exported.

FY2023 remains the Alcazar’s best fiscal year yet – 38,394 units produced (up 34% YoY), 26,696 units sold in India (up 3.1% YoY) and 11,334 units exported (up 292% YoY). However, since then, demand in both the domestic and export markets has fallen. FY2024 (20,753 units) was down 22% YoY and FY2025 (17,132 units) was down 17% YoY in India. Wholesales in April-May 2025, the first two months of FY2026, are also down – the 1,939 units are down 10% (April-May 2024: 2,163 units).

The Alcazar’s key rivals are the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus, of which the XUV700 is by far the clear leader on the sales front.

Hyundai Motor India launched the facelifted Alcazar in September 2024, a move which was expected to rev up this midsize SUV’s sales albeit that doesn’t seem to have happened. The updated Alcazar, which sports much-revised exterior styling and new interiors, benefits from a host of new features as also an ADAS suite which is a boost to its safety attributes.

Creta-based Alcazar targeted at family buyers keen on a modern, stylish and feature-rich 6- and 7-seater SUV that's high on space and comfort, and safety.

Feature-rich midsize SUV targeted at family buyers
At launch, the Alcazar was Hyundai Motor India’s fifth SUV after the Creta, Venue, Tucson and Kona. Since then, Hyundai’s SUV portfolio has expanded with the addition of the Ioniq 5 EV and Exter, while the Kona has been pulled out.

The Creta-based Alcazar is aimed at family buyers keen on a modern, stylish and feature-rich six- and seven-seater SUV, which is high on space and comfort, and safety equipment. At 4,560mm, the facelifted Alcazar is 230mm longer than the Creta, 10mm wider at 1800mm, and 75mm taller at 1710mm. Wheelbase at 2760mm is 150mm more than the Creta.

The Hyundai Alcazar is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that produces 160hp and 253 Nm of torque and enables the SUV to achieve a 0-100kph time of 10.21 seconds. The diesel is Hyundai’s 1.5-litre turbocharged U2 CRDi unit from the Creta rated at 116hp and 250 Nm torque but slightly retuned to manage the Alcazar’s higher kerb weight. Both engines come with a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-convertor automatic transmission options.

Hyundai at present has 14 variants on offer for the Alcazar – seven each for petrol and diesel – with pricing starting at Rs 17.47 lakh for the base 1.5 Turbo Executive 7-seat petrol variant and going upwards to the 1.5 CRDi Signature six-seater (AT) for Rs 25.40 lakh (both prices, on-road Delhi).
