INDIA SALES: Top 10 Two-wheelers in June 2016
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI)’s popular Activa brand of scooters has once again topped the list of best-selling two wheelers in India for the sixth month in a row.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI)’s popular Activa brand of scooters has once again topped the list of best-selling two wheelers in India for the sixth month in a row.
The popular Honda Activa has been outselling the conventional best-selling two-wheeler – Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor range of mass commuter motorcycles – since January 2016. The Activa outsold the Hero Splendor by more than 20,000 units in June 2016. Interestingly, the Activa had topped the Top 10 two-wheelers list in June 2015 as well. While the most popular scooter brand raked in sales of 226,686 units (which translates into 7,556 units every day in June 2016), the highest selling motorcycle brand, Hero Splendor, sold 204,609 units in June 2016.
According to a press note from Honda, an automatic scooter has for the first time in 17 years broken the monopoly of motorcycles dominating the market by being the top seller for six consecutive months.
Cumulative sales of Honda Activa (January – June 2016) stand at 13,38,015 units as compared to Hero Splendor’s total sales of 12,33,725 units for the same period.
Elaborating on how Honda Activa continues to transform the Indian two-wheeler industry, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, senior vice president - sales &marketing, HMSI, said, “Activa today represents the metamorphosis of the society. The superior convenience, unisex appeal coupled with product features (increased mileage, style and technology) has converted millions from pillions to riders. Honda’s Activa has come to symbolize a remarkable blend of reliability, comfort and convenience, style and an uncompromised performance. We thank our valued customers who have made Activa the most preferred choice of families for commuting in India. That’s what we call Activating the Nation.”
According to the company, top selling Activa’s sales are now on par with the 15 percent of the overall two-wheeler industry.
However, it should be noted here that Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler maker, has just launched an all-new 110cc model under its Splendor brand last week. The Splendor iSmart 110, also the first motorcycle completely developed in-house by the engineers at the company’s Jaipur-based R&D centre, is expected to fetch good response, thanks to the combination of popular start-stop tech and the Splendor umbrella.
Although the company management declined to share any sales forecast on the new model, it is understood to sell at par with the older Splendor iSmart model, if not more. It can be recalled that the Splendor iSmart sold an average of 28,000-35,000 units per month after it was launched in March 2014. It is, therefore, expected that in the coming months Hero Splendor could catch up with Honda Activa’s soaring monthly sales.
On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp continues to occupy four ranks in the top five best-selling two-wheelers list. At number three is its 97cc HF Deluxe mass commuter motorcycle, which sold 106,486 units last month. June 2016 also saw the current 125cc bestseller, Hero Glamour outsell the Hero Passion range, which could be a first amongst the two Hero brands. While the Glamour sold 80,348 units, the Passion garnered sales of 76,639 units in June. The company is now gunning for Glamour as its fourth brand to achieve one million plus sales landmark in the coming months.
At the sixth position is TVS Motor’s moped, XL Super, which sold 74,599 units last month. The moped has been a consistent performer for the company, which has recorded an increase in XL Super’s sales after rolling out the model across many Indian states.
Losing its rank, Honda’s CB Shine now stands at seventh position with sales of 74,286 units in June. HMSI is planning to ramp up the production capacity of this model, thereby increasing its supplies in the market. The Honda CB Shine is expected to notch better sales in the coming months, thereby closing the gap with Hero’s Glamour models.
TVS Motor’s highest selling scooter model, the 110cc Jupiter now ranks as the eighth best-selling two- wheeler model in India. The model, which is also the only other scooter in the top selling list, sold 46,145 units last month.
Bajaj Auto’s Pulsar range and CT100 occupy the ninth and tenth positions in the best-performing two-wheelers’ list for June 2016. While the Pulsar range notched sales of 43,794 units, the CT 100, the most affordable model from Bajaj Auto, sold 43,049 units last month.
