Even as Hyundai Motor India celebrates its 28th year of Make in India and the inauguration of its new manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Pune, Maharashtra yesterday (October 14), the popular Hyundai Creta has achieved yet another sales milestone: 1.5 million units.
Launched on July 21, 2015, the Creta, Hyundai Motor India’s best-selling SUV and India’s No. 1 midsize SUV, has till end-September 2026 registered total domestic market wholesales of 1.51 million units. Considering the Korean car and SUV manufacturer has sold nearly 10 million passenger vehicles in India since its market entry, the Creta accounts for 15% of the Hyundai India’s total passenger vehicle (cars and utility vehicles) sales and 55% of its utility vehicle (UV) dispatches of 2.74 million UVs since its July 2015 launch.
On the export front, Hyundai India has shipped an estimated 295,994 units overseas till August 2026 which means the made-in-India Creta will cross the 300,000-units export milestone in November-December this year.
Even as the surging demand for compact SUVs continues unabated, there is growing demand for bigger, feature-laden midsize SUVs and the Hyundai Creta has managed to hold its own despite plenty of new competition.
The Hyundai Creta is currently offered with 27 variants and three engines (a 115hp 1.5-litre petrol, a 160hp 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a 116hp 1.5-litre diesel) and a choice of four gearboxes, from a plain manual to a dual-clutch. The IC-engined Creta’s pricing ranges from Rs 10.91 lakh (Petrol E MT) through to the top-end Diesel King Knight AT which costs Rs 20.14 lakh (ex-showroom). The automatic variant, Diesel EX(O) AT is priced at Rs 16.08 lakh. The Creta has an ARAI-certified mileage of 17.4kpl to 21.8kpl across the range. On the safety front, the Creta comes with six airbags and ABS with EBD on every variant.
In January 2025, Hyundai launched the electric avatar of the midsize SUV – the Creta EV. Offered in nine trim levels, the Creta EV’s pricing starts at Rs 18.03 lakh and goes up to Rs 23.82 lakh, ex-showroom. The Creta EV has a travel range of 420km (with 42kWh battery pack) and 510km (with 51.4kWh battery pack), as per the Modified Indian Driving Cycle or MIDC.
The Creta’s highest fiscal year sales (ICE and EV) were in FY2026 – 201,921 units, up 4% YoY – which gave it a 35% share of Hyundai India’s 584,906 PVs and 50% of its UV sales of 399,569 units. In FY2026, the Creta was India’s second best-selling SUV after the Tata Nexon (21,054 units), holding onto the same rank it had in FY2025 and FY2024. The only time the Creta topped the UV charts was in the Covid-impacted FY2021 with 120,035 units.
In the first six months of FY2027, combined sales of the ICE Creta and Creta EV are 89,727 units, down 10% YoY (April-September 2025: 99,345 units). However, despite the YoY decline in H1 FY2027, the Creta (89,727 units) remains the longstanding No. 1 midsize SUV, ahead of the Maruti Victoris (72,012 units), Kia Seltos (67,667 units), Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder (49,419 units), Maruti Grand Vitara (45,176 units) and the Tata Sierra (39,468 units).
NEW CRETA DELIVERS A SALES BOOST, THIRD-GEN MODEL CONFIRMED
As the wholesales data table above depicts, Creta sales saw a marked rise after the launch of the facelifted model in January 2024 with completely redone styling, front and rear and also plenty of updates to the interior. The midsize SUV buyer took to the new Creta rapidly. So much so that the new Creta cruised to 100,000-unit sales in just six months, making it the fastest in its segment to hit the 100,000 milestone and in half the time rival Maruti Grand Vitara took. In the 33 months since its launch, the new Creta has sold an estimated 531,465 units, accounting for a 35% share of the 1.51 million Creta SUVs sold in the domestic market to date.
Meanwhile, at its 2026 CEO Investor Day, Hyundai has confirmed that it will bring a next-gen version of the Creta to India before 2030. As per Autocar India, the new third-gen Creta will likely use the same K3 platform that underpins the second-gen Kia Seltos. Test mules of the next-gen Creta indicate that the SUV will be larger and have boxier proportions, whereas the interior is expected to get a fresh design, Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect infotainment interface and an enhanced feature set.
Under the bonnet, the new Creta is expected to carry over the existing model’s 115hp 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 160hp 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol and 116hp 1.5-litre diesel engines, along with their respective gearbox options. Additionally, Hyundai is likely to introduce a strong-hybrid powertrain for the next-gen Creta, potentially based on the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
