Hyundai Motor India Opens Pune Plant, Marking Expansion Beyond Chennai Base
The Talegaon facility adds 170,000 units of annual production capacity and represents the company's first major manufacturing footprint outside Tamil Nadu.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Pune, on October 14, 2026, expanding its production network beyond its original Chennai facility, which has been operational since the company entered India in 1996.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presided over the inauguration, joined by Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung, HMG President and CEO José Muñoz, and HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg, along with South Korea's Ambassador to India, Lee Seong-ho.
The plant currently has an installed annual capacity of 170,000 vehicles and is planned to scale to 320,000 units by 2030. Combined with the Chennai plant, HMIL's total production capacity is projected to reach approximately 1.14 million units annually by that year. The facility also includes an engine shop capable of producing 150,000 engines per year.
HMIL has stated it will invest up to INR 11,000 crore in the Pune plant in phases. The new Hyundai Venue compact SUV will be manufactured exclusively at this facility and exported to more than 35 countries.
The plant is built around Industry 4.0 principles, incorporating AI-based quality inspection, predictive maintenance, digital simulations, and augmented reality-based workforce training, running on Hyundai's proprietary E-FOREST digital factory platform.
On the supply chain side, 55 Tier-1 suppliers are already operating in Pune, having collectively invested around INR 4,600 crore in Maharashtra. Nearly half of the supplier network sits within a 50-kilometre radius of the plant. HMIL says the combined Tier-1 and Tier-2 supplier ecosystem has generated over 18,000 jobs in the state.
Alongside the plant inauguration, HMIL marked cumulative exports of four million passenger vehicles from India since it began exporting in 1999, making it the largest passenger vehicle exporter from India to date. The company has also sold close to 10 million vehicles in the domestic market over its 30 years of operations.
HMIL's registered office remains in Tamil Nadu, where its original SIPCOT Industrial Park plant in Sriperumbudur continues to operate. The Pune plant represents the company's first significant manufacturing investment outside that state.
The facility received the 2026 Red Dot Award for workplace design. HMIL also cited nearly 40 ongoing research collaborations with seven Indian academic institutions focused on battery technology, electrification, and future mobility.
