Top 10 Two-Wheelers – April 2018 | Honda Activa races ahead of Hero Splendor
The battle between the two arch rivals for the top spot in the Indian two-wheeler market continues in the new fiscal.
Starting afresh in FY2019, the Honda Activa not surprisingly has bagged the top spot in the list of bestselling two-wheeler brands in India in April 2018.
Honda’s iconic scooter brand, which has well penetrated through the traditional mass commuter motorcycle markets during its run of more than 15 years in the domestic market, had lost to Hero MotoCorp’s Splendor motorcycle brand as the bestselling two-wheeler in India in March 2018 after dominating for 13 months.
Nevertheless, in April 2018, Honda reported sales of 339,878 units under its Activa brand, which marked a YoY growth of 8.72 percent. It outsold the Hero Splendor, which sold 266,067 units (up 17.38 percent YoY), by a margin of 73,811 units during April 2018.
It can be recalled that Hero MotoCorp has recently launched an updated 125cc Super Splendor to boost sales of the Splendor’s top-of-the-line variant and consolidate its market position in the 125cc executive commuter motorcycle market alongside its category bestseller – the Glamour.
Hero’s consistent performer, HF Deluxe stays at number three with sales of 172,340 units in April 2018, recording a YoY growth of 19.85 percent.
Honda’s CB Shine continues to dominate the 125cc motorcycle category with sales of 104,048 units in April 2018. However, the brand has registered a flat growth of 3.20 percent YoY. The CB Shine is India’s fourth bestselling brand for the month.
Meanwhile, Hero’s commuter brand Passion has recorded sales of 95,834 units in April 2018. It ranked fifth in the list as it grew by 19.71 percent YoY. India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer has also rolled out Passion’s 110cc variants – Pro and XPro recently, aimed at pepping up the sales of this brand.
The sixth spot is occupied by yet another popular motorcycle brand from Hero MotoCorp. Its 125cc Glamour sold 69,900 units in April 2018 and grew by 11.46 percent YoY.
Bajaj Auto’s largest selling motorcycle brand Pulsar has displayed signs of impressive YoY growth recovery with sales of 67,712 units in April 2018. The Bajaj Pulsar ranked as the seventh largest selling two-wheeler brand in India during the month. It grew by an impressive 34.83 percent YoY.
Closing following the Bajaj Pulsar is TVS Motor’s most affordable two-wheeler, the XL Super moped, which has recorded sales of 67,708 units in April 2018. The Xl Super has grown by 16.86 percent YoY and has ranked eighth in the list.
Bajaj Auto’s top selling 100cc commuter, CT100 has ranked ninth in the list with sales of 59,944 units in April. The Bajaj CT100 registered growth of 33.20 percent YoY.
TVS Motor’s bestselling scooter, the 110cc Jupiter ranks last in the Top 10 two-wheelers’ list with sales of 56,599 units in April 2018, down by 3.29 percent YoY. The scooter brand may have taken heat from potential customers of TVS Motor’s latest 125cc Ntorq 125.
SIAM data has it that the overall two-wheeler market has grown by 16.92 percent YoY in the first month of FY2019, which indicates that the market is carrying forward its growth momentum into the new fiscal. Two-wheeler industry experts anticipate robust growth for the industry in FY2019 too.
