Indian Auto Industry Reports Mixed Performance in July 2025
Indian auto sector sees mixed July 2025 sales: two-wheelers and three-wheelers grow, passenger vehicles dip slightly, while e-rickshaws decline and e-carts surge.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released its monthly auto industry performance data for July 2025, highlighting a mixed trend across vehicle segments.
Total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles reached 2,698,519 units during the month. Domestic sales showed varied growth, with the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments registering positive growth, while passenger vehicle sales recorded a marginal decline.
Passenger vehicle sales stood at 340,772 units in July 2025, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to 341,510 units sold in July 2024. It should be noted that sales data for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Cars were not available for the report. Tata Motors' domestic sales are included in the total passenger vehicle figures, though a detailed segment-wise breakdown for the company is not provided.
The three-wheeler segment recorded its highest-ever July sales, reaching 69,403 units—a 17.5% increase from the 59,073 units sold in the same month last year. Growth was driven by strong demand in both passenger and goods carrier categories, with sales rising to 58,693 (21.4% growth) and 9,194 units (10.6% growth), respectively. However, e-rickshaw sales declined significantly by 53.3%, dropping to 1,053 units from 2,253 units in July 2024. In contrast, e-carts saw a sharp rise of 161.6%, with sales increasing from 177 to 463 units.
The two-wheeler segment demonstrated robust growth, with total sales reaching 1,567,267 units in July 2025—up 8.7% from 1,441,694 units in July 2024. Scooters led the growth with a 16.2% increase, totaling 643,169 units sold. Motorcycle sales rose by 4.7% to 890,107 units, while moped sales declined by 9.5% to 33,991 units.
Quadricycle sales data for July 2025 was not available, with only 19 units reported in July 2024.
Commenting on the overall market trends, Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, noted that all vehicle segments showed stable performance during the month. He added that while sentiment in the passenger vehicle segment remains subdued, the onset of the festive season—beginning with Onam in late August—is expected to boost demand in the coming months.
The industry remains cautiously optimistic about sustained momentum in the second half of the fiscal year.
