Yamaha Targets 50,000 Annual Sales for R2 in India
Priced from Rs 2,30,500, the new 204cc supersport motorcycle will sit above the R15 as Yamaha targets India’s fast-growing premium two-wheeler market.
India Yamaha Motor is targeting annual sales of 50,000 units for the newly launched YZF-R2 in India as it looks to strengthen its position in the country’s premium motorcycle market.
“The rolling target for one year is 50,000 units,” Hajime Aota, chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group, said during a media round table following the motorcycle’s global debut in India.
The target translates into a monthly run rate of more than 4,000 units, making the R2 an important volume contributor to Yamaha’s premium portfolio rather than a niche model positioned above the R15.
Yamaha’s immediate priority will be the domestic market. Company executives said exports remain part of the R2 programme but will follow after the new model establishes itself in India.
“Our focus initially is the domestic market because this is a brand-new product and there is a lot of anticipation in the market,” a Yamaha executive said. “Exports are, of course, always on the cards, but our first priority is going to be domestic.”
The R2 will be manufactured in India and has been designed for domestic and international markets. Autocar Professional had earlier learnt that Yamaha has guided its vendors to prepare for total annual volumes of around one lakh units, with the balance beyond the Indian target expected to be exported to markets including Europe, Japan and Taiwan.
Prices Start at Rs 2,30,500
The YZF-R2 marks Yamaha’s entry into India’s competitive 200cc motorcycle segment. It will be available through Blue Square dealerships from mid-September 2026.
The base R2 is priced at Rs 2,30,500 and will be offered in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray.
The second variant, equipped with what Yamaha claims is a segment-first third-generation bi-directional quick-shifter, costs Rs 2,39,500. It will be available in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue.
The range-topping R2M is priced at Rs 2,53,000 and will be offered in Metallic Gray. It gets the quick-shifter, adjustable front and rear suspension, adjustable clutch and brake levers, a smart key and model-specific finishes.
Premium Segment Leads Market Growth
The R2 target comes as premium motorcycles grow considerably faster than the broader Indian two-wheeler market.
Industry volumes increased 21% to 10.67 million units in the first half of 2026, from 8.81 million a year earlier, according to data presented by Yamaha.
The premium segment led this growth, expanding 37% to 1.04 million units. By comparison, the deluxe motorcycle segment grew 26% to 9.10 lakh units, while scooter volumes increased 28% to 3.68 million units.
Yamaha outpaced the overall market, with its first-half volumes rising 41% to 4.1 lakh units from 2.9 lakh a year earlier.
The company reported premium motorcycle volumes of 1.36 lakh units, which it said represented an increase of 49%. Deluxe motorcycle sales grew 25% to 86,000 units, while scooter sales increased 38% to 1.88 lakh units.
Premium motorcycles accounted for around one-third of Yamaha’s volumes during the period, while scooters contributed approximately 46%.
The R2’s annual target translates into average monthly sales of about 4,167 units. This is equivalent to approximately 18% of Yamaha’s average monthly premium motorcycle volumes in the first half of 2026, underlining the model’s importance to the company’s growth plans.
“India remains a world volume leader. But the real story right now is value and premiumisation,” Aota said.
He added that premiumisation is not defined only by engine capacity or price. Yamaha sees it as a combination of performance, technology, design, ownership experience and the emotional connection between the product and its rider.
All-New Platform and Engine
The R2 has been developed on an all-new platform, with its engine engineered in Japan in collaboration with Yamaha’s Indian teams.
It is powered by a new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 26.5PS and 19.1Nm. Yamaha claims the motorcycle offers the highest power output and lowest weight in its segment.
The R2 has a kerb weight of 149kg. Standard equipment includes traction control, an assist-and-slipper clutch, dual-channel ABS, 37mm upside-down front forks and 17-inch wheels.
Yamaha Ride Control offers Street, Sport and Rain modes, while a five-inch colour TFT display provides access to riding and navigation information.
The model builds on the R15 franchise, which Yamaha introduced in India in 2008. According to the company, more than one million R-series motorcycles are now on Indian roads.
“The YZF-R2 is not an entry into a new segment; it is a motorcycle created for riders who are committed to the spirit of the Yamaha R-series,” Aota said.
