Volvo Cars’ first all-electric car plant will have a maximum annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The facility is being added to the automaker’s European manufacturing footprint as it works towards an all-electric vehicle lineup.
Dürr will provide turnkey planning and implementation across conveyor, filling and testing systems. Its NEXT.assembly concept combines these technologies with consulting services and modular components covering conveyor, assembly, filling and testing operations.
Dürr filling systems for Volvo Cars’ Košice plant
For final assembly, Dürr will use filling technology already deployed at other Volvo Cars facilities. The systems include special handling equipment, while the Košice installation is designed to accommodate future requirements, including new low-conductivity coolants and next-generation air-conditioning refrigerants required by future European legislation.
Automated inspection and headlamp alignment systems
The Košice plant will use Dürr’s x-wheel system for chassis measurement and adjustment. The system uses an x-3Dsurface non-contact sensor for area-based measurements and can accommodate different tyre and body shapes.
The measurement process determines the driving axis used for headlamp alignment. Dürr will also supply its camera-based x-light measuring and setting system, which inspects low beam, high beam and fog lamps and adjusts them semi-automatically in accordance with ECE and SAE standards.
More than 3km of conveyor systems
Dürr will supply the complete conveyor system connecting the various final assembly stages at Košice. More than 3km of conveyor technology will transport car bodies and doors through the plant, using electric monorail systems, skillet platforms and modular chain conveyors.
Dürr Italy CEO and NEXT.assembly Vice President Andreas Hohmann said the automated final assembly system combines automated processes with measurement and inspection technologies.
Production at Volvo Cars’ Košice plant is planned to start in 2027, with the facility designed for a maximum annual output of 250,000 cars.
