Vedanta Boosts Renewable Energy Use by 50%
On World Earth Day, the Indian conglomerate reported a significant jump in clean energy consumption, avoiding three million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions across its operations in FY26.
Vedanta Limited, one of India's largest metals, oil and gas, and critical minerals conglomerates, announced on Tuesday that it increased its renewable energy usage by more than 50 percent in the financial year 2026, reaching 3.97 billion units, up from the previous fiscal year.
The company said the shift contributed to avoiding three million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the period. The announcement was made on World Earth Day.
Alongside the renewable energy expansion, Vedanta reported a 15 percent reduction in its metals carbon intensity since a FY21 baseline, falling from 6.45 to 5.44 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of metal produced. The company also utilised 365 kilotonnes of biomass as an alternative fuel, which it estimates reduced emissions by an additional 0.5 to 0.6 million tonnes.
Several of Vedanta's subsidiaries received recognition for sustainability performance. Hindustan Zinc Limited secured the top global ranking in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2026 and became the first Indian mining company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals. Vedanta Aluminium was ranked among the top ten global companies in the same yearbook.
The company also reported progress on water stewardship, with three of its business units, Hindustan Zinc, Cairn Oil and Gas, and its Iron Ore division, achieving net water positivity.
Vedanta stated it remains committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
