Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced that its cumulative hybrid vehicle sales in India have crossed the 3 lakh unit mark, as demand for self-charging hybrid electric vehicles (SHEVs) continues to grow in the domestic market.

The company said the milestone reflects increasing consumer acceptance of hybrid technology, driven by factors such as fuel efficiency, lower emissions and ease of ownership. Toyota currently sells hybrid models in India, including the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Innova HyCross, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Toyota Vellfire.

Toyota said its hybrid technology combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, allowing the vehicle to operate in electric mode for a significant portion of urban driving conditions. The system charges its battery through regenerative braking and engine power, removing the need for external charging infrastructure.

Commenting on the development, Sabari Manohar, Executive Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said hybrid technology continues to play a role in the company’s broader electrification strategy in India.

Toyota also stated that it offers an 8-year warranty on hybrid batteries as part of its hybrid vehicle programme in India.

Globally, the company said it has sold more than 38 million electrified vehicles across different technologies, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles and fuel-cell electric vehicles.
