Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc. commenced operations at their new manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu on February 9, 2026. The plant's first vehicle is the Range Rover Evoque, manufactured locally for JLR.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran formally inaugurated the facility. The ceremony was attended by state ministers, government officials, and senior executives from TMPV, JLR, and the Tata Group.
The Panapakkam facility represents the initial phase of a greenfield plant designed to produce next-generation vehicles, including electric vehicles, for both Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover brands. According to company statements, production will scale progressively to reach the facility's designed annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles over the next five to seven years, catering to domestic and international markets.
Tata Motors plans to invest approximately Rs 9,000 crore in the facility to support long-term growth objectives. The plant is expected to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and support development of the ancillary supplier ecosystem.
The facility employs shopfloor technicians from across Tamil Nadu who participated in Tata Motors' Lakshya programme. This initiative provided five months of hands-on training at JLR facilities and offers participants the opportunity to earn a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while working.
The plant incorporates several sustainability measures. Company officials stated the facility has been designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and be water positive, with operations adhering to global environmental benchmarks.
Chief Minister Stalin remarked that the facility expansion represents a significant milestone for Tamil Nadu's automotive manufacturing sector. Chairman Chandrasekaran described the plant as marking an important step in the Tata Group's strategy to advance sustainable and technology-driven manufacturing in India.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., part of the $180 billion Tata Group, manufactures cars and SUVs in India with multi-powertrain options including electric vehicles.
