STMicroelectronics unveils compact automotive synchronous buck converters for diverse applications

STMicroelectronics has introduced new automotive-qualified step-down synchronous DC/DC converters designed to save space and simplify integration in various applications such as car body electronics, audio systems, and inverter gate drivers.

The A6983 series includes six non-isolated step-down converters and the A6983I isolated buck converter. These monolithic devices feature on-chip compensation circuitry, requiring only minimal external components. The non-isolated A6983 models can supply up to 3A load current with 88% efficiency at full load, while the A6983C variants are optimised for light-load operation, and the A6983N variants minimise output ripple for low-noise applications. Both types offer multiple voltage options.

The A6983I isolated buck converter, ideal for isolated gate drivers in traction inverters and on-board chargers, eliminates the need for an optocoupler and allows accurate primary output voltage adjustment. All variants feature a low quiescent current, a power-saving shutdown mode, and high input-voltage tolerance.
Offered in a 3mm x 3mm QFN16 package, the converters are priced starting at USD 1.75 for the A6983 and USD 1.81 for the A6983I for orders of 1000 pieces. Free samples and evaluation boards are available to support development.
